Some rivalries write their own scripts. Mohun Bagan Super Giant have set up a mouthwatering Durand Cup 2026 final showdown against East Bengal, surviving a tense, goalless 90 minutes in Shillong before prevailing 4-3 on penalties to end defending champions NorthEast United’s title defence.

## Mohun Bagan vs NorthEast United: A Battle of Nerves in the Hills

Neither side could find a breakthrough across regulation time at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, forcing a penalty shootout where Mohun Bagan’s composure ultimately proved decisive. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, fresh off his heroics in the marathon 9-8 shootout win over Jamshedpur FC in the previous round, once again played a crucial role in denying NorthEast United’s third consecutive Durand Cup final appearance.

## The Road to the Durand Cup Final

| Team | Semifinal Result | Path |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mohun Bagan | 0-0 (won 4-3 on penalties) vs NorthEast United | Beat Jamshedpur 9-8 on pens in QF |
| East Bengal | 0-0 (won 5-3 on penalties) vs SC Delhi | Beat Indian Army 1-0 in QF |

## Sweet Revenge Two Years in the Making

This result carries genuine emotional weight for the Mariners. Back in the 2024 Durand Cup final, NorthEast United shocked Mohun Bagan 4-3 on penalties after coming from two goals down, denying them a historic title defence. Getting past the Highlanders this time, and in similarly dramatic penalty fashion, offers a fitting sense of closure.

## Setting the Stage for a Classic

With East Bengal having already booked their spot in the final through their own penalty shootout win over SC Delhi, Asia’s oldest football tournament will crown its champion through a full-blooded Kolkata Derby — a fixture that needs no introduction for Indian football fans.
