Dune: Prophecy” Series Set to Debut This Fall: What to Expect from the Epic Prequel Journey

The teaser offers a glimpse into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, showcasing their rising influence across the Imperium. Set well before Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” the upcoming series centers on two sisters, Valya (portrayed by Emily Watson) and Tula (played by Olivia Williams), who lay the foundation for the iconic Bene Gesserit. Within the Dune universe, this enigmatic group is renowned for their ability to resist the Voice and possess various mystical powers, including mastery over their fertility.

The six-episode series is set to premiere this fall, although an exact premiere date has not yet been confirmed. Originally titled “Dune: The Sisterhood” when commissioned in 2019, the series draws inspiration from the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

According to the official logline, “Dune: Prophecy” explores the vast universe of ‘Dune,’ crafted by renowned author Frank Herbert, unfolding 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides’ rise. The series chronicles the journey of two Harkonnen sisters as they confront threats endangering humanity’s future, laying the groundwork for the legendary Bene Gesserit sect.

“From the expansive universe of ‘Dune,’ created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.”

Synopsis

Following their introduction in Villeneuve’s 2021 film, the Bene Gesserit emerge as a formidable sisterhood of influential women, both politically and literally. Their collective ambition revolves around the creation of the Kwisatz Haderach, a prophesied figure destined to wield unparalleled authority over the galaxy under their guidance.

Context

Set against the backdrop of a post-war universe, where the devastation led to the eradication of all computational technology, the narrative embarks on a journey of restoration and transformation. Griffin and Valya, the eldest offspring of the Harkonnen dynasty, navigate the complexities of their family’s legacy while inadvertently contributing to the genesis of the Bene Gesserit.

Exploring the Significance of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ in Expanding the Dune Universe

Despite being a prequel set prior to the events of Dune, the Prophecy trailer introduces familiar elements from the cinematic universe, such as the Bene Gesserit and the Harkonnens, offering insights into the social dynamics of Arrakis. Additionally, the sleek black spacecraft and holographic shields evoke imagery from Denis Villeneuve’s movies.

Dune: Prophecy ventures into Frank Herbert’s universe with creative freedom, allowing for an exploration of the Bene Gesserit’s origins and their relationships with the great houses. While not directly based on Herbert’s books, the series promises to delve into early traditions and practices, with hints of involvement from House Harkonnen.

Amidst anticipation for Dune 3, Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune: Messiah is on hold, making Dune: Prophecy a timely addition to the franchise. Scheduled for release this fall, the series offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the worldbuilding and mythology of the Dune universe, following the success of Dune: Part Two. The teaser suggests a promising start, hinting at an epic sci-fi journey preceding the events of Paul’s saga.
