December 18, 2026 is shaping up to be the biggest movie date of the year — and possibly one of the most competitive in cinema history. **Dune: Messiah** (Dune 3) and **Avengers: Doomsday** are releasing on the exact same day, and IMAX just quietly handed one of them a massive early advantage.

## What the IMAX Deal Actually Means

IMAX officially announced that Dune 3 will receive an exclusive IMAX theatrical window on its opening weekend, with screenings taking place in select international markets. This means that during the most critical box office window — opening weekend — Dune 3 will own the premium large-format experience in those territories.

For a franchise built on breathtaking visuals and an immersive sound design, this is a massive commercial and artistic win. Avengers: Doomsday, on the other hand, will only be released in IMAX theatres in the international market — not with opening weekend exclusivity.

## The Barbenheimer Comparison Nobody Can Ignore

Remember **Barbenheimer** in 2023? Two wildly different blockbusters, one weekend, and cinema broke records. Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday are set to create a similar situation — two of the most anticipated high-scale films clashing on the same date. But unlike Barbie vs Oppenheimer, this clash involves two films fighting for the exact same premium audience.

[IMAX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX) exclusivity historically translates into higher per-screen averages and stronger word-of-mouth momentum in the opening weekend — the most statistically important box office window for any blockbuster.

## Why This Is a Big Deal for Dune 3

Dune 3 is the closing chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy — a saga that has redefined epic sci-fi filmmaking. An IMAX exclusive opening isn’t just a business decision; it’s a statement that this film is built to be seen at maximum scale, and theatres are betting accordingly.
