Chelsea have completed the signing of New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović on a permanent deal. The Premier League club will pay a fixed fee of $17.5 million plus $2.5 million in add-ons for the shotstopper.

The 23-year-old will complete the medical for the transfer soon and will then be announced as yet another new arrival for the Blues. The player has agreed a seven-year contract until 2030, with the option for another year until 2031.

The 23-year-old will compete with fellow new arrival Robert Sanchez as the starting goalkeeper for Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine’s plans have been scrambled following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s sudden loan transfer to Real Madrid. The Spaniard was expected to be the number one for Chelsea this season, but was signed on a temporary deal to replace the injured Thibaut Courtois.

It is unclear whether Djordje Petrović will be started by Pochettino right away. Lucas Bergstrom is also available, but the club considers him not ready to play with the senior team just yet.

The Serbian has been with New England Revolution since April 2022, and has kept seven clean sheets in 22 MLS games so far. Chelsea sent Gabriel Slolina out on loan for the coming season before Kepa left and as a result they have been forced into the signing of a new goalkeeper to compete with Sanchez.
