DJI has announced the Osmo Action 3, the latest addition to its family of compact action cameras. This new offering from the world’s leading drone manufacturer features a complete redesign, sporting two touchscreens and a focus on portrait-mode shooting.
For this release, DJI has something of a challenge on its hands, as the release date of this new action camera coincides with the announcement of the GoPro Hero11 Black and GoPro Hero11 Mini. The new camera ramps up the battery capacity significantly and makes the camera more creator-friendly than ever.
DJI OSMO Action 3
Based on DJI’s specifications, the Osmo Action 3 has the same 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor as the Action 2 that outputs at 12 MP with a 155° FOV and an f/2.8 aperture. However, DJI has included RockSteady 3.0 software for superior image stabilization. Like its predecessor, the Osmo Action 3 also offers HorizonSteady, HorizonBalancing, and a quick-release design.
The new camera’s big features are the powerful battery and the ability to rotate the camera ready for vertical shooting natively. Specifically, the Osmo Action 3 has an ‘Extreme Battery’, which is DJI’s marketing for a 1,770 mAh battery. Reputedly, the Osmo Action 3 should last up to 160 minutes while recording 4K videos, which only drops by 10 minutes even in -20 °C temperatures.
Additionally, the Osmo Action 3 offers 16 meters waterproofing without a dedicated case, unlike the Action 2. Moreover, the 145 g action camera has two displays, with a 2.25-inch rear display joined by a front display that measures 1.4-inches across. Furthermore, DJI has integrated three microphones within the Osmo Action 3, rather than one in the Action 2’s camera unit and three in its front touchscreen module. If the built-in microphones prove insufficient, the Action 3 supports DJI microphones via direct USB-C connections and other external microphones via 3.5mm to USB-C.

Heat management is a big new feature of this and other new action cameras, and the camera sees a major boost in this respect. The new OSMO Action can shoot 4K 60fps for full battery life without overheating. Professional movie D-Cinelike Color Mode is available in video, and other popular favourites such as slow-motion and timelapse modes also feature.
Osmo Action 3 is available today, and comes in two packages: The Osmo Action 3 Standard Combo retails for $329 and includes Osmo Action 3, one Osmo Action 3 Extreme Battery, the Osmo Action 3 Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame, the Osmo Action 3 Quick-Release Adapter Mount and the Osmo Flat Adhesive Base. The Osmo Action 3 Adventure Combo retails for $439 and includes the same package, but with three batteries, two quick-release mounts and a battery case. A slew of accessories are available, including strap mounts, handlebar mounts, helmet and suction cup mounts, lens covers, etc.
