Dimitri Payet has confirmed that he will be leaving Marseille after spending six years with them. The player revealed the news at a press conference, and was overcome by emotion upon announcing his decision.
At 36, the club decided to let his contract expire after he was informed that he was no longer a part of the project. Payet wanted to continue playing with Marseille, but was unable to reach an agreement over a new contract. He has now parted ways with them and is seeking a new opportunity to further his playing career.
Dimitri Payet to leave Marseille as free agent
“I want to leave through the front door and, even at 36, I still have goals that keep me awake. I tell myself that I can’t stop until I win something with the club,” the player said recently when asked about his future.
Payet played for Marseille between 2013 and 2015. He went on to sign for West Ham United, but returned to Marseille in 2017 and has established himself as one of their top players during his second spell.
In 326 appearances across all competitions, Dimitri Payet scored an impressive 78 goals and provided 95 assists. He was offered a role in the club’s coaching staff by the president, but turned it down in favour of extending his playing career.
Marseille recently completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Chelsea. And Payet is now on the market to join a new club this summer.
