MediaTek is anticipated to stick with ARM’s CPU and GPU designs when they release the Dimensity 9400 this year. Reports indicate that the flagship SoC will feature a configuration including one Cortex X5 and three Cortex X4 cores along, with the ARM Immortalis G900 series GPU. Initial tests show a 10% difference in graphics performance compared to the Dimensity 9300.

More About the Dimensity 9400

Although the specific model of the Immortalis GPU remains undisclosed there are speculations that it might be the Immortalis G920 for the Dimensity 9400 considering the Dimensity 9300 uses the Immortalis G720. However, performance results show an improvement with benchmarks suggesting that the Dimensity 9400 achieves 110FPS in GFXBench Aztec compared to 99FPS for the Dimensity 9300.

The similarity in performance brings to mind a comparison involving Apple’s M3 GPU which also showed underwhelming results, in GFXBench compared to its predecessor M2. It is suggested that optimizations may be needed in benchmarking tools to accurately showcase each chipset’s capabilities. There could also be issues where the software fails to recognize or differentiate features of the Dimensity 9400 GPU.

The leaked Geekbench 6 scores show that the Dimensity 9300 performs comparably to leaks achieving 10,000 points in both single-core and multi-core tests. However, it falls slightly behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. There are also rumors circulating about the Cortex X5 element, in the Dimensity 9400’s CPU cluster showing performance at clock speeds due to increased power consumption and reduced multi-core performance, at lower frequencies.

MediaTek’s reliance on ARM’s CPU and GPU designs in the long term leaves little room for alternatives. While readers are advised to approach these rumors with caution, MediaTek may need to further optimize the Cortex-X5 to strike a balance between power and efficiency. Failure to do so risks diminishing the momentum garnered by the Dimensity 9300, which analysts at Morgan Stanley consider to be the most potent smartphone chipset currently available.
