Indian space surveillance startup [Digantara](https://www.digantara.co.in/)has secured $50 million in Series B funding, marking the largest space sector deal in India this year. The Bengaluru-based company is pivoting from space debris tracking to missile detection and defense, responding to surging global demand for space-based security capabilities.

### From Space Debris to Missile Defense

Digantara initially focused on space situational awareness, tracking orbital debris and objects that pose risks to satellites. The company’s first satellite, SCOT (Space Camera for Object Tracking), launched in January 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-12 mission, enabling space-to-space observation capabilities.

CEO Anirudh Sharma explained the strategic shift: “Given we’ve already built IR sensors, we are now extending our IR capabilities to other domains like mid- and long-wave infrared”. This technology allows detection of missile launches through their heat signatures, providing faster threat identification than traditional ground-based radar systems.

### Global Military Contracts

The expansion comes as governments invest more heavily in space-based surveillance and early-warning systems as missile launches and satellite interference become more frequent. Digantara opened a Colorado Springs office earlier this year and secured contracts with U.S. Space Command for analytics services. The company was also selected for the Missile Defense Agency’s SHIELD contract vehicle, supporting next-generation defense programs.

### Strategic Geographic Split

To meet national security requirements, Digantara has structured operations across geographies, with its U.S. team focused on designing larger satellites in the 100-kilogram class for American defense, while India-based operations concentrate on analytics and data processing.

The funding will support aggressive expansion: $7-10 million for U.S. operations, $2-3 million for European presence, and the remainder for scaling India-based manufacturing. The company plans three SpaceX launches in 2025—March, June, and October—deploying 15 satellites total by 2027.
