Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball Award for the 1986 World Cup has resurfaced, and will be auctioned by Aguttes, a renowned auction house, on June 6. The trophy was reportedly lost, with no concrete news regarding its whereabouts. While there were theories about it being lost or stolen, the original Adidas Golden Ball has now been recouped and verified.

Maradona received the trophy at a ceremony in Champs-Élysées in 1986, after the World Cup. However, it vanished shortly after. In 2016, it was found again as part of a private collection, and collectors from across the world will be able to participate in the auction by providing a €150,000 deposit.

Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball Award for 1986 World Cup found – will be auctioned

The Argentine icon etched his name in the history books with his performance at the 1986 World Cup. He scored the goal of the century, a solo dribble from the halfway line, as well as the “Hand of God” goal.

Eventually, he went on to lead Argentina to the title by defeating West Germany in the finals, and is now hailed as one of the best in history.

Maradona passed away in 2020 at the age of 60, which makes the auction all the more valuable for people who want to keep a piece of history with them.
