Sevilla have rejected Newcastle United’s advances to sign Diego Carlos, and the centre-back will be staying in Spain. The Magpies had offered a ‘very important bid’ that the team rejected in favour of keeping the player.

Here is what sporting director Monchi had to say about the transfer situation: ‘We last spoke three days ago. Both sides explained their position and we judged the negotiation to be closed and over. I don’t foresee it reopening.’

Diego Carlos to stay with Sevilla for the time being

The Brazilian centre-back has a number of admirers all across Europe. And Newcastle United had outlined him as one of their top targets for the winter transfer window, after signing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to boost their chances of surviving the drop.

Sevilla board have decided to keep Diego Carlos. After long negotiations with Newcastle and two bids turned down, Sevilla have NO intention to sell Brazilian centre back in the final days of the window 🚫🇧🇷 #Sevilla

According to previous reports, he had reached an agreement with Newcastle United on personal terms, agreeing to a five-year deal. But, as things stand, he will be helping Sevilla mount their title challenge until the end of the season.

Diego Carlos and co are only four points away from table toppers Real Madrid, and are the only genuine title contenders alongside Los Blancos. With such little time available to find a replacement for Carlos, Monchi has decided to reject Newcastle’s bid, admitting that things could’ve been different in the summer.

For Diego Carlos, it is a trade-off between a chance to earn a lower wage, but to fight for a top league title, instead of battling relegation while earning three times as much.
