Sevilla have presented Diego Alonso as their new head coach, after the dismissal of Jose Luis Mendilibar months after he helped them win the Europa League for a seventh time. The Uruguayan will be managing in Europe for the first time ever, and admitted that in his presentation. But, he reminded everyone of his experience as a player and promised to implement his philosophy through the team.
Alonso has signed a contract with the Basque side until the end of the ongoing season. He was most recently in charge of the Uruguayan national team, but stepped down after being unable to guide them out of the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Diego Alonso named new Sevilla head coach until the end of 23/24
“Although this is my first coaching job in Europe, I have experience as a player here. There’s a first time for everything, so it feels like a natural step and I’ve prepared for this moment for a long time. I know the competition well and even when I haven’t been working I’ve lived here and studied the game. I’m informed on the situation here and this understanding is necessary. Every manager has their own style of play and philosophy, and we will try to implement ours. You will see our plans soon,” Diego Alonso said at his presentation.
Last year, Jose Luis Mendilibar was appointed to guide the team out of the relegation zone. He not only achieved the primary objective of staying in LaLiga, but also guided the team to the Europa League title.
But, on the back of a poor start to the season, the board was cautious of avoiding the same situation and pulled the trigger early. They consider Alonso the right candidate to lead the club forward, but he will have a massive challenge right from the get-go, since Sevilla face Real Madrid in their first game after the international break.
