Kylian Mbappé is set to return to the France squad in March for their Nations League quarterfinal matches against Croatia, head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed. The 26-year-old striker, who boasts 86 international caps, was absent from France’s previous international fixtures in October and November after finalizing his high-profile move to Real Madrid in July.

“Of course, he’ll be there. Why wouldn’t he be? Yes, for very specific reasons [he was not here] but he’ll be there if nothing happens to him between now and then,” Deschamps told L’Équipe.

Mbappé’s Comeback to the National Team

The French captain faced a challenging phase in recent months, both physically and mentally. After a taxing spell with Paris Saint-Germain, limited rest, and an injury-hit Euro campaign, Mbappé needed time to readjust before returning to international duty.

“He’s very attached to the French team, even if he’s had a complicated personal period. He’s back to full fitness, and you can see that in his game, and in his head too,” Deschamps said.

His adaptation to life at Real Madrid also contributed to his temporary absence from the squad. The transition involved adjusting to a new club environment, training system, and expectations.

“Few holidays, little preparation, six complicated months in Paris, back pain, a broken nose at the Euro — these things obviously have athletic and psychological consequences, not to mention his adjustment to Madrid,” Deschamps elaborated.

Mbappé’s Commitment to France Unwavering

Despite missing the previous international windows, Mbappé has reiterated his dedication to representing France. In December, he reassured fans and the national team staff that his commitment remains firm, regardless of his demanding club schedule.

The congested football calendar has become an increasing concern, with many players struggling to manage the relentless fixture list. For elite athletes like Mbappé, balancing club and national team responsibilities while maintaining peak performance is a significant challenge.

However, Deschamps emphasized that the striker did everything necessary to regain full fitness and prepare for his return. “It took some time, but it fell into place because he did everything necessary,” he stated.

Leadership Role Remains Unaffected

As captain, Mbappé’s absence raised questions about his leadership role within the squad. However, Deschamps dismissed any doubts, affirming that internal discussions and collective decisions always take place within the team.

“There have always been internal discussions, individual or collective … And [the previous international break] does not call into question his leadership,” Deschamps clarified.

His position as France’s captain remains unchanged for now, but Deschamps plans to have a conversation with him regarding his role. “I have no reason today to say that he will not be captain in March. But I will discuss with him, as we often do,” he added.

The Future of France’s Coaching Setup

Deschamps, who has been at the helm of the French national team since 2012, will step down after the 2026 World Cup. While speculation about his successor has already begun, the French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo believes it is too early to make a definitive decision.

One name that stands out as a potential replacement is Zinedine Zidane. Deschamps himself acknowledged Zidane as a strong contender for the position.

“Zizou is a very strong candidate, a natural one and I would add, an expected one. After that, it’s up to him and the chairman,” Deschamps stated.

“There’s a lot of respect between us. We last saw each other in the summer of 2023, and we plan to meet again next summer,” he added, hinting at ongoing discussions about France’s coaching future.

Looking Ahead to March and Beyond

With Mbappé back in the fold, France will be at full strength as they prepare for their Nations League quarterfinal clash against Croatia. His return is expected to boost the squad both in terms of performance and morale.

The road to the 2026 World Cup will be crucial for both Mbappé and Deschamps, with the legendary coach aiming to leave on a high note. Meanwhile, Mbappé, as France’s talismanic leader, will be keen to make up for lost time and guide his country to further success.
