Here’s a behind-the-scenes reveal that South cinema fans absolutely did not see coming. Director Vignesh Raja has dropped a fascinating piece of Kara trivia — and it turns out that one of the key roles in Dhanush’s upcoming action thriller was first offered to none other than Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran. Let that sink in for a moment.

Speaking to Cinema Vikatan, director Vignesh Raja revealed: “Prithviraj sir spoke with me after watching Por Thozhil. In fact, he was the initial choice for Suraj Venjaramoodu’s character in Kara.” He added, “When I narrated the character to Prithviraj sir, he said it didn’t work for him as it felt two-dimensional, though he believed the film would be a hit. After that, I narrated the role to a few others, and they shared similar feedback. I then reworked the character, and later, Suraj sir came on board.” [pinkvilla](https://www.pinkvilla.com/entertainment/south/was-dhanushs-kara-initially-planned-with-prithviraj-sukumaran-director-vignesh-raja-reveals-1402390)

The 1991 Gulf War backdrop gives *Kara* a rare historical grounding that makes it stand out from typical Tamil action thrillers. It is the kind of premise that promises both visceral action and genuine emotional weight — exactly what Dhanush does best. You can read more about the Gulf War’s historical context on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War).

## What’s Next for Dhanush and Prithviraj?

Prithviraj Sukumaran, meanwhile, will next star in the heist film *I, Nobody*, and also has Khalifa: Part 1, Mahesh Babu’s *Varanasi*, and *Santhosh Trophy* in his upcoming lineup.
