Denmark are the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020. Wales were beaten 4-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam as they bowed out of the competition.

Former Ajax player Kasper Dolberg marked his return to his former home ground by scoring a double to help his nation to victory. The first goal was a right-footed effort from outside the box that beat Danny Ward early in the game to hand the Danes the lead.

The second half saw Neco Williams attempt an awkward left-footed clearance of a cross only to send the ball right into Dolberg’s path. The former Ajax man buried it into Danny Ward’s goal for the second time in the match as Denmark deservedly doubled their lead.

Gareth Bale had a few opportunities at Kasper Schmeichel’s goal in the first few minutes. However, things changed drastically after the first goal of the game. Denmark completely grew into the game, and Wales were unable to launch any meaningful attacks.

The second half saw Denmark play a more defensive game, with the Welsh enjoying the majority of the possession. But despite having the lion’s share of the ball, they were unable to force Schmeichel to make a decent save throughout the 90.

Joakim Mæhle scored late in the game to make it 3-0, proving to be too much for their opposition on the day. Harry Wilson was sent off at the 90th minute for a late challenge, becoming the second man for Wales to be sent off in the Euros following Ethan Ampadu’s dismissal against Italy.

Martin Braithwaite scored his first goal in Euros late in injury time. While the on-field referee ruled it out for offside, it was ultimately given after a lengthy VAR check.

Denmark will face either the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the Euros. And no matter who they face in the last 8, they will be fancying their chances of making it to the semi-finals of the competition this time around.
