Denmark 1-2 Belgium: Red Devils book their place in last 16 as De Bruyne stars in comeback

Belgium completed a remarkable second half comeback against Denmark to become the second team to book their place in the last 16 following Italy. Yussuf Poulsen scored after only 98 seconds to score the second-fastest goal in the Euros.

The first half saw Belgium struggle to keep a hold of their opponents, who were fierce from the get-go. As planned before the match, the ball was put out in the 10th minute to pay respect to Christian Eriksen.

Denmark’s high-pressure on Belgium continued following the stoppage, with Romelu Lukaku barely getting any service from the rest of the team. The second half saw Kevin De Bruyne substitute Dries Mertens as a half time substitute.

And that is when the game started to turn around in their favour, with Thorgan Hazard scoring the equaliser for his country. Romelu Lukaku engaged in the kind of run that he has become famous for in Italy. The number 9 passed across to De Bruyne, who assisted the goal, showing great composure and vision to find his teammate that deep in the box.

He followed that up by getting onto the scoresheet himself, which was the result of another outstanding team goal from Belgium. Denmark had numerous chances to come up with an equaliser of their own late in the game. The closest they came was Martin Braithwaite’s header netting the crossbar and going over.

Considering the game that they played today, Denmark were unlucky to at least not come away with a draw. But in all honesty, the world’s number one squad showed exactly why they have that tag with the goals they scored. Despite today’s loss, Denmark have the chance to potentially make it into the round of 16 if they can beat Russia next.
