Manchester United are digging into their past to secure their future. Alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick, former Manchester United player Darren Fletcher has now been promoted to the first-team coaching staff having impressed with the Under 16s.

Here is what the United manager had to say about Fletcher’s inclusion into the backroom staff:

‘Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.

‘He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.’

Fletcher only retired in 2019 after spending two decades with Manchester United and making 342 appearances for the team. His final days of playing the sport saw him spend short spells at Stoke and West Brom before eventually hanging up his boots a couple of years ago.

The newly-promoted coach was delighted about getting to work with the first team only a year after coming into the coaching world. Here is what he had to say:

“I am delighted to be returning to the club as a first-team coach.

“It’s a very exciting time for this young team and I am looking forward to taking the next steps in my coaching career by working with Ole and his staff.”

Manchester United are really working hard on solidifying their identity as a club after being eliminated from the Champions League by RB Leipzig. The Red Devils are now level on points with fierce rivals Liverpool, whom they face after a trip to Burnley.
