#### 1. Kannur Squad (2023)

Directed by Roby Varghese Raj, this film stars **Mammootty** as George Martin, the leader of a real-life inspired police unit. Unlike stylized “mass” police films, *Kannur Squad* focuses on the grueling, low-budget reality of a chase across India to catch elusive criminals. It’s a masterclass in grounded storytelling.

#### 2. Oppam (2016)

In one of his most unique roles, **Mohanlal** plays Jayaraman, a blind man who works as an elevator operator. When he becomes the only witness to a murder in a high-profile apartment complex, he must use his heightened senses to protect a young girl and find the killer.

#### 3. Kammatipaadam (2016)

This Rajeev Ravi directorial is a gritty look at how the city of Kochi was built on the blood and sweat of the marginalized. Starring **Dulquer Salmaan** and a powerhouse Vinayakan, it’s a non-linear crime saga that explores friendship, betrayal, and the dark side of urbanization.

#### 4. Neru (2023)

A collaboration between Mohanlal and director Jeethu Joseph, *Neru* is a legal battle like no other. It follows a disgraced lawyer who takes up the case of a blind girl seeking justice for a traumatic assault. The tension remains high entirely within the four walls of a courtroom.

#### 5. Varathan (2018)

Starring **Fahadh Faasil** and Aishwarya Lekshmi, *Varathan* starts as a quiet domestic drama about a couple moving to a rural estate. However, it slowly simmers into a terrifying survival thriller, culminating in one of the most stylishly shot action climaxes in recent memory.

#### 6. Bheeshma Parvam (2022)

Set in the 1980s, Mammootty plays Michael, the patriarch of a powerful family in Kochi. While it pays homage to *The Godfather*, it remains uniquely Malayali. The film blends slick action with deep-rooted family rivalries, making it a visual and narrative treat.

#### 7. Memories (2013)

Prithviraj Sukumaran delivers a career-best performance as Sam Alex, an alcoholic police officer haunted by his past. He is forced to track down a serial killer who leaves cryptic religious symbols at crime scenes. It remains one of the most re-watchable investigative thrillers in the [Malayalam film industry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam_cinema).

### Why These Movies Stand Out

The beauty of a Malayalam thriller lies in its “human touch.” These aren’t just about the crime; they are about the emotional baggage the characters carry. Whether it’s the guilt in *Memories* or the social struggle in *Kammatipaadam*, the stakes always feel personal.
