Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Daley Blind on a free transfer. The defender left Ajax prematurely, after terminating his contract six months early.

And despite interest from other clubs in the Netherlands, the veteran has completed a surprise move to Bavaria. He is expected to cover for the injured Lucas Hernandez, and has signed a deal until the end of the 22/23 season. A potential extension will be discussed at the end of the campaign based on how he performs.

“We’re delighted that Daley is joining our team,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said. “Daley is a versatile defender. He has great international experience and leadership qualities. I’m sure he’ll help us.”

“I can hardly wait to play here,” Daley Blind told the Bayern website. “We’ve got the most important part of the season coming up, where it’s about titles — and a club like Bayern can win every trophy. The hunger for titles here at the club was key in my decision.”

The 32-year-old spent two four-year spells at Ajax, and also featured for Manchester United in between. He is now expected to link up with his new teammates, and will be flying to Doha, Qatar, for their training camp on Friday.
