Hyderabad FC Secures Japanese Winger as Preparations for the New Season Intensify

Cy Goddard, a 23-year-old midfielder with a diverse and promising career trajectory, has completed all formalities and inked a deal with Hyderabad FC. His signing is seen as a significant coup for the club, especially considering that several other teams were vying for his signature. Sources close to the club revealed that head coach Thangboi Singto was instrumental in ensuring the swift acquisition of Goddard, recognizing his potential to be a game-changer for the Nizams.

The club is now focused on finalizing Goddard’s visa, a critical step before he can join the team in Hyderabad and begin preparations for the new season.

From Tottenham Hotspur to Hyderabad: Goddard’s Football Journey

Cy Goddard’s football journey began at a young age when he joined the prestigious Tottenham Hotspur academy at just nine years old. His time at Spurs saw him develop into a promising young talent, making 16 appearances in the Premier League 2 during the 2016-17 season. Although he did not break into the senior team, his performances caught the attention of several clubs, leading to his move to Benevento Calcio in 2018.

At Benevento, Goddard made his senior debut against Spezia and continued to hone his skills in European football. In 2020, he made a significant move to India, joining Mumbai City FC on a year-long loan for the 2020-21 ISL season. His contributions were pivotal in helping Mumbai City FC secure both the league and championship titles, as he made 19 appearances for the Islanders.

Following his successful stint in the ISL, Goddard moved to the A-League, signing a two-year contract with the Central Coast Mariners. He made an immediate impact, scoring in his debut match against the Newcastle Jets. In 2022, Goddard took his talents to the United States, joining USL Championship side Detroit City, further expanding his international experience.

Goddard returned to Indian football in 2023, signing with Odisha FC. Over the course of the 2023-24 season, he made 26 appearances, including eight in the AFC Cup, showcasing his versatility and consistency on the field.

Hyderabad FC’s Transfer Strategy Under New Ownership

Their withdrawal from the 2024 Durand Cup highlighted the difficulties they encountered, particularly in securing key player signings. However, with the club now under the new ownership of the BC Jindal Group, there has been a noticeable shift in strategy and urgency.

On transfer deadline day, Hyderabad FC finalized deals with six Indian players: Sourav K, Isaac Vanmalsawma, Ayush Adhikari, Devendra Murgaonkar, Parag Shrivas, and Leander D’Cunha. These signings were made in quick succession, demonstrating the club’s commitment to strengthening its roster.
