Crystal Palace are on the verge of sealing a summer transfer for Croatian left-back Borna Sosa from Ajax, in a deal believed to be worth around £3 million. The 27-year-old has been granted permission to travel to the UK and is expected to undergo his medical on Monday, ahead of finalizing a permanent move to Selhurst Park.

This acquisition marks Palace’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benitez from PSV Eindhoven. Manager Oliver Glasner is keen to strengthen his squad with experienced international talent as the club prepares for its first-ever participation in European football next season.

Why Palace Want Borna Sosa

Sosa brings a wealth of experience to the table. A versatile defender capable of playing as both a traditional left-back and a more advanced wing-back, he’s known for his offensive thrusts down the flank, pinpoint deliveries, and intelligent defensive positioning.

Since his debut for the Croatian national team in 2021, he has earned 26 international caps, including starting five of Croatia’s six matches during their run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.

From Amsterdam to South London

Sosa joined Ajax from Stuttgart in 2023 but spent last season on loan at Serie A side Torino, where he made 20 appearances and contributed significantly to their mid-table finish. Despite having three years left on his Ajax contract, the Dutch giants informed him he was no longer in their plans.

His career also includes over 100 appearances for Stuttgart, where he emerged as a consistent performer in the Bundesliga after beginning his professional journey at Dinamo Zagreb.

Competition for Mitchell

At Selhurst Park, Sosa is expected to provide competition and depth for Tyrick Mitchell, who has held the starting left-back role since 2021. Former Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell was brought in on loan in the second half of last season but struggled for minutes and has since returned to Stamford Bridge.

Sosa’s addition could prove crucial for Palace’s upcoming European journey, where squad depth will be key. However, their participation in the UEFA Europa League remains uncertain.

European Uncertainty Looms

Palace’s Europa League qualification — earned by winning the 2024 FA Cup — is in limbo due to UEFA regulations. The club’s ownership structure, particularly Eagle Football’s stake in both Palace and Lyon, has sparked concerns over conflict of interest. Lyon’s potential relegation to Ligue 2 amid financial issues could pave the way for Palace’s entry, but UEFA is awaiting a final ruling from French authorities.

In a related move, Eagle Football’s majority shareholder John Textor has agreed to sell his 43% stake in Crystal Palace to Woody Johnson, owner of the NFL’s New York Jets. That deal, however, still awaits Premier League approval.

Transfer Outlook: More Incomings and Outgoings

Sosa’s move may not be the last this summer. The Eagles could be forced to fend off interest in key players like Eberechi Eze, reportedly targeted by Arsenal in a possible £68 million deal, and Marc Guehi, who is on Liverpool’s radar.

Still, the acquisition of Sosa signals Palace’s intent to compete on multiple fronts next season, combining experience, international pedigree, and tactical depth.
