The US-based cover glass manufacturer Corning made an announcement earlier this week that it has reached the final stage of development for its cover glass for foldable smartphones. So, it looks like Corning will start shipping its foldable cover glasses for foldable smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung, Oppo, and so on. Though, Corning is not the only company in the market which is making glass cover for foldable handsets of Samsung. Another one is there for a tough competition against Corning, the German-based company Schott. But, Corning looks ahead of it as the company is in the final stage of the foldable cover glass development and the mass production and commercialization are about to begin in 2021.
Corning has started developing it back in September this year, as the company had said that it was testing samples and the cover glass will get launched officially within 1 year as planned. On the other hand, the substrate glass is used in the ultra-thin glass cover made by Samsung Electronics for its foldable smartphones. Schott has been the sole supplier of it. Now, for the foldable OLED panels, Samsung is looking to dependent on Corning’s cover glass.
Regarding the partnership between Samsung Display with Schott, the South-Korean tech monster has signed a three-year exclusive purchasing deal for their glass substrates. So, it looks like the competition will rise higher between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display over processing the cover glass. As per some reports, Samsung is about to launch its Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphone in June next year. So, within the next few months, Samsung is going to get Corning cover glasses for its upcoming foldable smartphone.
