Corning has introduced Gorilla Glass Ceramic, a new protective layer for smartphones that incorporates ceramic to enhance durability. This is on the heels of the company’s recently launched Gorilla Armor 2, which also incorporates ceramic materials and is currently in use on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. It has been confirmed that the upcoming Motorola smartphones will come equipped with a new Ceramic layer.

Corning Unveils Gorilla Glass Ceramic for Smartphones, Motorola to Debut First Device
According to Corning, the Ceramic glass layer gives better drop performance on rough surfaces than rival aluminosilicate glasses. The firm claims that during in-house tests, the Ceramic glass survived ten back-to-back drops from a height of one meter to surfaces simulated of rugged terrain (180-grit sandpaper), while competing glasses broke on the first drop. In comparison, Gorilla Armor 2 is said to have survived drops from as high as 2.2 meters to a concrete-like surface; no word on how many drops were done.
Motorola will be the first brand to include Corning’s Gorilla Glass Ceramic, but the device details have not been revealed. That’s actually quite interesting because in the past year, Motorola pledged to embed Gorilla Glass protection in its products in a joint effort with Corning. As the launch date gets closer, we shall hear more about the new Ceramic layer.
While Gorilla Glass Ceramic is designed to meet the demands of Android smartphones, Corning previously made a similar technology for Apple devices. First introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020, Ceramic Shield is a glass made using a high-temperature crystallization technique that embeds ceramic nanocrystals into the glass matrix. Apple continues to use an advanced version of this technology in its latest iPhone 16 series.
With the introduction of Gorilla Glass Ceramic, Corning aims to provide Android manufacturers with a durable glass solution that enhances drop resistance and durability, further expanding its portfolio of advanced smartphone protection technologies.
