Alienware’s announcement – CES 2022:
One of Alienware’s most anticipated CES 2022 announcements is the 17-inch M17 R5 Ryzen Edition. It has a similar appearance to the previous model, but it is an AMD Advantage machine on the inside, identical to the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage.
In the case of Alienware, this means it’ll be a showcase for AMD’s new Ryzen 7 and 9 6000-series processors, as well as the Radeon RX 6850M XT graphics chip and a few AMD synergy-enabled features.
For the first time, AMD SmartShift Max, SmartAccess Memory, and SmartAccess Graphics are included in one system.
It’s difficult to tell from language how well a laptop should perform when running the latest, most demanding apps and games, but the specs appear to be quite promising. The M17 R5 Ryzen Edition may be configured with an octa-core Ryzen 9 6980HX processor and a Radeon RX 6850M XT graphics chip with 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM that can draw 175W of power with SmartShift Max (prices haven’t been released for this configuration, sadly).
That’s a lot of power for a GPU in a mobile device, and I’m interested to see how that translates to stutter-free gameplay, particularly on the 4K display option, which offers a 120Hz refresh rate (3ms response time) and FreeSync adaptive sync compatibility. This model is available with 1080p screens with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 3ms reaction time, or a 360Hz refresh rate and a quicker 1ms response time.
This variant features two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 64GB of 4,800MHz dual-channel RAM. Both single and dual storage configurations are offered, with a maximum storage capacity of 4TB for both.
If you choose Nvidia graphics, Alienware has several alternatives, beginning with the RTX 3050 Ti and progressing to the RTX 3080 Ti. The entry-level model starts at $1,599, but the top-of-the-line model is likely several hundred dollars more. A 2.5Gbps ethernet port, a headphone jack, three USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a power plug, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a USB-C 4 Gen 2 port are included in every configuration above the base 3050 Ti model.
Unlike the Alienware X-series laptops, the M17 is aimed towards gamers looking for a desktop replacement with a large display. This machine, as well as all of Alienware’s new X-series and M-series laptops for 2022, has Dolby Vision HDR, according to the company. However, because it weighs 6.82 pounds, this model isn’t one you’ll want to carry around too often. In the spring of 2022, this model will be available.Â
