In a rather stunning development, Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos has agreed to join Aston Villa in the Premier League. The transfer has been made official by the Midlands club on their official website.

They have confirmed that the player will be flying to England to complete his medical and agree personal terms to finalise the transfer. This is the first big sale for Sevilla this summer, as they are expected to let go of Jules Kounde as well. Chelsea are the frontrunners in the race for the Frenchman’s signature, and could agree a deal once their sanctions are lifted.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the transfer fee agreed is €31 million, which is a little less than his rumoured €40 million release clause. He will be signing a long-term contract with his new club, but the duration of it is not known as of yet.

Diego Carlos was a priority target for Newcastle United in the January transfer window. But, they failed to reach an agreement with Sevilla over his transfer in the middle of the season. Now, seemingly to fend off competition from the other clubs, Aston Villa have moved fast and completed the negotiations very quickly to swoop him up.

They have already agreed the signing of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara this summer. And by the looks of things, Villa might be putting up a strong competition for European football next season.
