It’s going excellent for India as the nation bagged the third gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, 2022. Achinta Sheuli, 20 won gold in the 73 kg category, weight lifting. He lifted 166 kg in the first attempt, failed in the second attempt and lifted 170 kg again in the third attempt. He lifted a total of 313 kg and created a record. He broke the record two times by lifting 143kg and 141kg.

Earlier, in 2021, Achinta had won silver in the 73kg category at the Junior World Championship 2021. Achinta Sheuli was considered a strong opponent from the other teams from the very beginning. Eri Hidayat from Malaysia bagged the silver medal lifting 303 kilograms in total and the bronze medal was won by Canada.

The youngster accepted that he got pressurized after Sanket Sargar won the silver medal in the 55kg men’s weightlifting finals on this Saturday. He also gave credit to coach Vijay Sharma for whom he could perform better.

He says to NDTV  “It was not easy, but somehow I made it easy as I was not able to make a proper lift on my second attempt. There was tough fight after that. Vijay Sir was telling me to do better, I tried my best.”

Further, talking about his struggles he stated “My mother has left tailoring now, earlier she used to do it from morning to night. I also used to do it. I want to dedicate this medal to my brother as he always supports me. There was pressure as Sanket Sargar had won a medal”

On the other hand, Jeremy Larinnunga finished at the fourth spot in the 67 kg category of weightlifting. India won a total of 6 medals in the Commonwealth Games, 2022 till date.
