Chelsea’s Youthful Core is Shattering Premier League Records, but Can They Truly Compete for the Title?

Chelsea have made a promising start to the 2024-25 season, despite fielding the youngest average starting XI in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s Strategy Shift Under New Ownership

When Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium acquired Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, their transfer market strategy quickly became evident.

Their goal was to sign as many highly talented young players as possible, offering them long-term contracts with the hope that some would blossom into superstars, driving the club toward success or, at the very least, become valuable assets to sell for profit.

The agent of one such player, David Datro Fofana, shared with Norwegian newspaper VG in early 2023 that Chelsea had a “very clear plan” to ensure the players’ success. Of course, it was clear that not every player would develop in the same way, but the extended contracts increased the chance of the club profiting even if some players took longer to progress than others.

This approach has sparked considerable criticism. Some have raised concerns about how Chelsea are spending their money, with the spending spree forcing the club to sell homegrown talents, while others argue that stockpiling young players could be unethical and even harmful to the players’ careers.

The next phase of Chelsea’s strategy involved embracing the multi-club model. Boehly made their intentions clear shortly after his arrival, stating they wanted a European club where they could send young players to gain valuable experience without “putting their development in someone else’s hands.” In June 2023, less than a year later, BlueCo acquired French club Strasbourg, thus establishing a multi-club group.

Although the Strasbourg partnership has been contentious in Alsace, the ownership group’s approach is already influencing Chelsea’s direction. This may not come as a surprise, as Chelsea had already begun investing in and fielding young players at the start of the 2022-23 season.

However, Chelsea’s shift towards youth has certainly reached a new level this season.

Record-Breaking Youth on the Pitch

The key takeaway is that the average age of Chelsea’s starting XI in the league this season is just 23 years and 195 days, putting them on track to break the Premier League record for the youngest starting XI in a single season, currently held by Leeds United in the 1999-00 season at 24 years and 162 days.

Chelsea have named the youngest starting XIs in the Premier League this season, with the average age of their lineup just 23 years and 195 days, a figure that puts them on track to break the Premier League record for the youngest starting XI in a single season.

So far, Chelsea have fielded starting XIs younger than their average age on six occasions this season. The 10 youngest starting XIs in the Premier League in 2024-25 have all belonged to Chelsea, with their youngest lineup of the season set at 23 years and 89 days against Newcastle in late October. In the 1-1 draw with Manchester United the following Sunday, they named the same team, increasing the average age by seven days to 23 years and 96 days.

This lineup against United was the youngest Chelsea have ever named for a Premier League game at Old Trafford, with 26-year-old Robert Sánchez being the oldest player in the starting XI. Sánchez is not the oldest player to feature for Chelsea this season, though. That distinction goes to Christopher Nkunku, who is four days older than the Spanish goalkeeper.

Tosin Adarabioyo, at 27 years old, is the oldest and only 27-year-old to have played for Chelsea in the Premier League this season, a record that may change later in the month when Sánchez and Nkunku turn 27. Ben Chilwell, who turns 28 in December, has yet to play in the league this season, having appeared only for a half in the EFL Cup.

Chelsea are the only team in the Premier League this season to have not given a single minute to players aged 28 or older. Key players such as Thiago Silva (39), Hakim Ziyech (31), Romelu Lukaku (31), Raheem Sterling (29), and Kepa Arrizabalaga (29) all left the club during the summer.

However, despite their youth-driven squad, Chelsea aren’t actually the team with the youngest average starting XI across Europe’s top five leagues this season. Two clubs have named lineups younger than Chelsea’s 23 years and 89 days against Newcastle.

One such team is Parma, who fielded a starting XI with an average age of just 23 years and 12 days during their Serie A match against Napoli on 31 August, though they ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat after a late collapse. Parma’s average age for the season stands at 24 years and 39 days, which is older than Chelsea’s.

The Multi-Club Model: Strengthening the Youth Pipeline

If you’re still wondering which team has the youngest average starting XI this season, the answer is closely linked to Chelsea’s multi-club ownership model – and, as you might have guessed, the team in question is Strasbourg.

Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, holds the distinction of being the only team in the top five European leagues to field a starting XI with a younger average age than Chelsea’s.

The median age of Strasbourg’s starting lineups in Ligue 1 this season has been 21 years and 322 days. The youngest lineup they’ve named had an average age of 21 years and 243 days, while their oldest was 22 years and 243 days — still younger than Chelsea’s youngest starting XI.

However, there’s more to the story than just these figures. From a more cynical perspective, Strasbourg could be viewed as a talent farm for a larger club, and that’s exactly how some of their fans feel. The fan group Fédération Supporters RCS recently published an open letter criticizing the situation, describing the club as “only a training centre.”

RCS criticized the situation further, stating: “BlueCo’s imposition of an obligation to buy only very young hopefuls is senseless on a sporting level, and the fans don’t relate to their team at the moment.”

This debate will likely continue for some time, especially as vocal Strasbourg supporters work to rebuild their emotional connection with the club. Whether BlueCo’s strategy is the right one isn’t for us to decide, but the ownership group has made it clear that their focus is on developing young players, and that’s evident at both Chelsea and Strasbourg.

An Early Look at Chelsea’s Future Prospects

Both clubs have made solid starts to the 2024-25 season. Strasbourg, who have finished higher than 10th in Ligue 1 just twice this century, sit in ninth place after 10 games, while Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League after the same number of matches.

Though it’s still early days, Chelsea are beginning to show signs of progress under Maresca, with a core group of players who could potentially become world-class in the next seven years — if they’re not already.

Only time will tell if a better balance of youth and experience will be necessary for sustained success. However, it’s worth remembering that the record for the youngest Premier League champions was set by José Mourinho’s Chelsea in the 2004-05 season, with a starting XI average age of 25 years and 250 days.

While no one expects Chelsea to challenge for the title this season, they are certainly laying the groundwork to become a major force in the near future.
