Chelsea Women have won their second consecutive league title, beating Reading Women 5-0 on the final day. Manchester City were the only other club in the competition for the league title. However, they needed to beat West Ham United by 4 goals or have Chelsea lose to Reading.

However, the Blues dominantly surged forward to capture the league title. Neither situation played out in City’s favour, as they only beat West Ham by one goal despite enjoying 80% possession.

With their claim on the 20/21 Women’s Super League title, Chelsea women are the first club to retain the title since Liverpool in 2014. Additionally, this is their fourth league title victory which makes them the team with the most championship titles, surpassing Arsenal who have three.

Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes reflected after the dramatic title win to keep their quadruple hopes alive:

“Teams have invested, some heavily. It’s not like the competition was, ‘Oh Chelsea have spent all the money and the rest haven’t’. No. It doesn’t work like that.

“I think there were four teams, to be fair, that could have been in with a shout at the title at one point or another. This is the hardest one. The fact that it’s gone to the last day demonstrates that.”

With the league title and continental cup secured, Chelsea will be looking to bring home the Women’s Champions League trophy this Saturday. They will have to wait to compete in the FA Cup after it was delayed due to the pandemic.
