Chelsea women have made it to the finals of the 20/21 Women’s FA Cup. The tournament was postponed to December, and the Blues have booked their ticket for Wembley. The London club won the 20/21 WSL and Continental Cups. They will now be hoping to complete the treble with the 20/21 FA Cup.
The reigning WSL Champions easily defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the semi finals. In contrast to the intense clashes we are used to seeing between the two teams, this one was a bit one-sided. Manchester City came into the game with a number of injuries to deal with. Chelsea were missing a few of their own, but did enough to earn a clear win.
Erin Cuthbert opened the scoring for Chelsea, following a corner from Guro Reiten. Melanie Leupolz would double their lead five minutes later from a distance. City were defensively resolute on the other side of the break. However, a headed effort from Bethany England in the 89th minute buried the game.
“That was one of my favourite performances,” said Blues manager Emma Hayes at the end of the match. “We’ve had a lot of players travelling all over the world and it’s a squad game – we had to pick a team that would do the first part and then the rest to come from the bench.
“I thought our mentality was superb today. I thought everything – our pressing and counter-pressing, how we created chances, was so efficient. I’m really pleased.”
