Sam Kerr scored the match-winning goal to help Chelsea win their third straight Women’s FA Cup. The Aussie scored her fifth goal in four visits to Wembley Stadium, and showed exactly why she deserved the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award she recently won.
The introduction of Pernille Harder was key to Chelsea getting the win. The Dane picked out Sam Kerr in the box to give the Blues the lead. And eventually, it proved to be the difference maker as United lost in their first major final.
Chelsea win Women’s FA Cup for the third time in a row
“We didn’t have a great game today, but it’s the sign of a great team that we pushed on,” Kerr said.
United had several opportunities early on in the game, but were unable to take them. And eventually, they allowed the opposition to grow into the game and find the back of the net near the 70th minute.
77,390 fans were present at Wembley Stadium – a record number for a domestic women’s game. And for Chelsea fans that have been dismal over the men’s team’s performance this season, the women’s team is offering them respite.
Manchester United and Chelsea still have a battle raging on in the Women’s Super League. Although the Red Devils are first in the table right now, Emma Hayes’ side has a game in hand, and are a point behind. They could retake the top spot if they can beat West Ham United, and finish the season with a domestic double.
