Frank Lampard’s first match back in charge of Chelsea ended in a 1-0 defeat to Wolves. It was yet another toothless display from the South West London side, who not only looked lost in attack, but also lacked cohesion severely.

The only goal of the game came through Matheus Nunes, who scored his first Premier League goal in a manner he will never forget. The Portuguese launched a remarkable volley that beat Kepa and found the side netting from a tight angle.

Chelsea continue their dismal form in spite of managerial change

Contrary to the 3-4-3 formation that has been used for the most part this season, Lampard opted to use a 4-3-3. Enzo Fernandez retained his spot in midfield, joined by Mateo Kovacic and Connor Gallagher. But the Chelsea academy graduate was visibly poor on the field, giving away the ball way too many times.

The team failed to construct anything offensive, and they lookee disjointed yet again. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got minutes in a Chelsea shirt after months, and added a bit to the attack. But, in spite of the introduction of Christian Pulisic and Mikhailo Mudryk to replace Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix, nothing really clicked.

Felix was once again one of the brightest attackers for the Blues, but failed to threaten the opposition too much. Reverting back to a familiar system could be Frank Lampard’s best bet at this stage, especially considering their next game is against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals.

But even then, the defending champions of Europe head in as strong favourites to go through to the semi-finals.
