Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final fixture. Karim Benzema stole the show with yet another hat-trick in the Champions League, this time scoring at the home of the European champions for his side.
With the win, Los Blancos already have one foot in the semi-final of the competition, and are looking unstoppable right now. Benzema’s last game saw him score three against PSG at the Bernabeu, and he has repeated the same against the reigning champions in the very next UCL game.
Benzema shines for Real Madrid again
The Real Madrid number 9 opened his account with a remarkable header, after making a diagonal run in the box and ending up unmarked following Vinicius Jr’s cross. He would then score a similar headed goal supplied by Luka Modric to put the visitors two goals ahead within half an hour.
Before half time, Kai Havertz was able to score one for Chelsea, heading the ball past Thibaut Courtois. But, a horrendous error from Edouard Mendy saw Karim Benzema gifted an open goal to score in. And the Frenchman made no mistake, as he completed a second consecutive hat-trick.
Romelu Lukaku had a golden chance to make it 3-2, but his header went wide in the second half. Chelsea were not up to the mark for a second game in a row, losing to Brentford over the weekend. And now, they have their work cut out for them against a raging Bernabeu crowd.
