Frank Lampard’s Chelsea stumbled to a first-ever home defeat against Brighton, losing 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The only positive from the game was Chelsea scored a goal after what seemed like ages again. Mykhaylo Mudryk has become their leading assist provider with an eye-catching two to his name, since arriving in January.
“More than defeats, it’s performance we have to talk about. Wins only come with performance and in terms of performance that was the most disappointing one because we were well beaten,” Lampard said after the game.
Another day, another defeat for woeful Chelsea
To put it bluntly, Chelsea are playing like a team facing relegation. There’s no bite to their bark in attack, and there is absolutely no intensity or aggression when they go forward. Even in defence and midfield, the opposition gets to impose themselves too much onto the game, forcing errors or dominating en route to goal.
“It’s not for me to talk about where the intensity and aggression is coming from, but it’s for me to try to get to the bottom of it quickly and change it.
“It’s my job to get as much improvement as I can but from that performance we certainly have work to do,” Lampard added.
As the fans on Twitter will tell you, it has been hard to watch Chelsea this season. They are disjointed, lack intensity, lack composure and are way too prone to errors. And they haven’t been helped by the managerial carousel or the constant addition of new players.
A comeback in mid-week against Real Madrid seems like too much of a miracle to ask for, even with Chelsea’s record of being the underdogs. And with European football now looking like a distant dream for next season, the best thing that fans can hope for right now is to not get relegated because their performances really don’t suggest otherwise.
