Carlo Ancelotti set a new Champions League record following Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Braga at home to seal qualification to the last 16. The Italian was already the manager with the most Champions League titles in history, and has now set the record for the most wins in the competition too.
To add more context to his achievement, here is where he ranks among the other greats to have taken charge in Europe’s top flight.
Carlo Ancelotti’s new Champions League record: Top 5 managers with the most wins
5. Jose Mourinho – 80 wins
The Special One has been away from the Champions League for quite some time (since 19/20), currently managing Roma in the Europa League. However, he remains among the top five with the most wins in the competition at 80 out of 151 games, winning the trophy with Porto and Inter.
4. Arsene Wenger – 103 wins
The only manager on this list to have not won the trophy in spite of having the fourth most wins in the Champions League, Arsene Wenger was an icon in his own right. In spite of leading Arsenal to the finals of the competition, he was never quite able to get over the line, but boasts a record of 103 wins with both Monaco and the Gunners.
3. Pep Guardiola – 107 wins
After leading Manchester City to their maiden title last season, Pep Guardiola extended his record to 107 Champions League wins. The Catalonian genius has won the trophy with Barcelona as well, and is soon expected to lead the list considering how much time at the top he still has left.
2. Sir Alex Ferguson – 115 wins
Sir Alex Ferguson won the trophy twice, both times with Manchester United, and held the record for the most wins at 115. He remains the most successful manager in Manchester United’s history, and will forever be remembered for his treble winning season just before the turn of the century.
1. Carlo Ancelotti – 116 wins
The Italian tactician now holds the record for the most wins in the Champions League at 116. He has won the trophy four times – twice with AC Milan and twice with Real Madrid, and will likely reach 120 before he leaves club football at the end of the 23/24 season to manage the Brazilian national team.
