Chelsea continued their losing run with a 1-0 loss against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg meeting. On the other hand, Benfica put one foot in the quarter finals of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Club Brugge.
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Chelsea: Champions League provides no respite for Blues
By the end of the game, Chelsea had an xG of 2.14, with the team hitting the post on multiple occasions. However, in spite of all their opportunities in front of goal, the ball simply wouldn’t end up in the back of the net.
Karim Adeyemi emerged as the match-winner for the black and yellow club around the hour mark. The youngster was released on a brilliant counter attack, and made the visitors pay by rounding the ball past Kepa and scoring.
In spite of spending more than the entire Premier League in the January transfer window last year, Chelsea haven’t been able to get the wins they so desperately need.
They are 10th in the league, and are out of both Cup competitions. And if they can’t overturn the deficit in front of their home fans, they will exit the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage to further pile onto their misery.
Club Brugge 0-2 Benfica: Halfway through to QFs
Two second half goals courtesy of Joao Mario and David Neres sealed the win for the Portuguese side. Benfica dominated possession, and had more attempts on goal as well.
Brugge were able to hold on in the first half, but were undone in the second period to lose at home. They will have a huge task ahead of them if they are to make it to the quarter finals ahead of Benfica.
