Champions League 2022/23 Group Stage: All the shocks and surprises as we progress to the Round of 16

The Group Stage of the 2022/23 Champions League is now over, with 16 teams qualifying for the Round of 16, while eight have been relegated to the Europa League. 

As it is with every edition, this year presented a lot of surprises too. However, we saw some big names eliminated in the very first stage of the competition. The likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have been dumped out despite being among the favourites to progress.

In the group of death with Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen, Barcelona finished third and dropped down to the Europa League for the second straight season. On the other hand, Juventus also finished third in their group with PSG, Benfica and Maccabi Haifa. 

Atletico Madrid presented one of the biggest shocks, being eliminated from European competition altogether. They finished last in their group consisting of Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge and Porto.

Eintracht Frankfurt made it to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time, in their debut campaign. Porto and Brugge also came up with a very strong performance, qualifying for the knockout stages. 

The draw for the Round of 16 will take place on November 7.
