## The Story: Dreams vs. Reality

Set against the turbulent backdrop of pre-independence Hyderabad under Nizam rule, Champion follows Michael Williams—a bakery worker with football dreams bigger than his circumstances. When England’s Manchester club offers him a spot, his father’s dark past becomes an unexpected roadblock.

Desperate to reach his destination, Michael agrees to smuggle guns across borders, a decision that lands him in Bairanpally village. Here, locals battle the oppressive Razakars, pulling our protagonist into a freedom struggle that threatens to derail his football aspirations permanently.

### What Works in Champion

Mickey J. Meyer’s soundtrack beautifully complements the rustic 1940s atmosphere, while cinematography captures authentic period aesthetics. Roshan Meka brings natural charisma to Michael, while [Anaswara Rajan](https://www.pinkvilla.com/entertainment/south/champion-review-roshan-meka-starrer-is-impressive-on-paper-but-loses-its-way-with-weak-execution-1400301) makes her Telugu debut with commendable effort.

### Where Champion Fumbles

Execution becomes the film’s Achilles heel. Poor editing transforms a potential 110-minute thriller into an exhausting 152-minute slog. Character development remains superficial despite talented performances from [Kay Kay Menon](https://technosports.co.in/best-south-indian-movies-ultimate-guide/), Prakash Raj, and Ranvir Shorey. Anaswara’s Malayalam accent occasionally breaks immersion for a 1940s Telugu village character.

## Why Period Sports Dramas Struggle

Champion joins a growing list of [Telugu sports dramas](https://technosports.co.in/netflix-2025-upcoming-telugu-movies-full-list/) that promise innovation but deliver conventionality. While the 1948 setting offers unique storytelling possibilities, the film fails to leverage historical context meaningfully.

Compare this to [successful South Indian films](https://technosports.co.in/top-10-tollywood-telugu-adult-movies/) that balance entertainment with cultural authenticity—Champion lacks that crucial ingredient.

## Final Verdict: Worth Streaming?

Champion has impressive potential buried beneath weak execution. It’s worth watching for Roshan Meka’s performance and historical curiosity, but don’t expect a memorable cinematic experience. The film joins Netflix’s extensive [Telugu movie catalog](https://technosports.co.in/123movierulz-telugu-movies-download/) as an average addition.
