Thursdayâs upcoming match marks the pivotal moment in the second UEFA Champions League semi-final encounter. Anticipating the clash at the Santiago BernabĂŠu, we offer our preview and prediction for the face-off between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

After securing their La Liga title, Real Madrid redirects their focus to the UEFA Champions League, aiming for an unprecedented 15th European triumph.
In the previous leg against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid encountered challenges, needing a late VinĂcius JĂşnior penalty to equalize the score at 2-2 and bring the tie back to Spain. However, historical significance often accompanies Real Madrid’s performances at the Santiago BernabĂŠu in this prestigious competition.
Their recent domestic victory, facilitated by Girona’s win over Barcelona, solidified their 36th league triumph, matching Juventus’s record in Europe’s top five leagues. Carlo Ancelotti’s squad showcased depth in their lineup adjustments, with Brahim DĂaz and Joselu contributing alongside Jude Bellingham in the goal-scoring department. Ancelotti opted to rest key players such as VinĂcius, Rodrygo, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde, AurĂŠlien TchouamĂŠni, and Antonio RĂźdiger, strategically planning for the crucial second leg on Wednesday.
VinĂcius’s pivotal role was evident in the previous encounter, with the forward scoring twice. His contributions throughout the Champions League campaign since the start of Madrid’s triumphant 2021-22 season, involving 16 goals and 15 assists, surpass those of any other player.
In the match at the Allianz Arena, VinĂcius JĂşnior’s striking goal was set up by a superb through pass from former Bayern player Kroos, who continues to be one of Ancelotti’s most relied-upon players. Notably, a significant portion of Kroos’s passes in this season’s Champions League have broken through at least one opposition line, making him the player with the highest percentage of line-breaking passes among those who have played at least 300 minutes in the tournament. In the first leg alone, Kroos delivered 23 such passes, more than double the number of the closest player (Konrad Laimer with 10).

This goal also showcased Madrid’s ability to string together a fluid passing sequence, as it came at the end of a 20-pass move. Despite the discussions surrounding Madrid’s European dominance, they continue to demonstrate their capacity for exceptional football. This goal marked their longest passing sequence leading to a goal in a Champions League knockout tie since May 2018, when Benzema found the net after a 28-pass buildup against Bayern at the BernabĂŠu.
Ancelotti, who guided Bayern to the Bundesliga title during the 2016-17 season, aims to further solidify his reputation as a master of European knockout football by reaching his sixth Champions League final. His current tally of five final appearances already surpasses that of any other manager.
On the opposing side, Thomas Tuchel could potentially achieve a historic feat by becoming the first coach to reach the final with three different teams. Previously, he experienced defeat in the 2020 final with Paris Saint-Germain before clinching victory with Chelsea in 2021.
Last week, Tuchel left open the possibility of reconsidering his future with Bayern, especially after Ralf Rangnick, Xabi Alonso, and Julian Nagelsmann declined the opportunity to succeed him. However, a disappointing performance in the Bundesliga over the weekend did little to strengthen Tuchel’s position, particularly as third-placed Stuttgart narrowed the gap to Bayern to just two points with a 3-1 victory.
Despite falling behind in the first leg, Bayern showcased resilience, with Leroy SanĂŠ and Harry Kane finding the net within four minutes in the second half, propelling them to a 2-1 lead. SanĂŠ’s goal came after an impressive drive into the area, resulting in his involvement in 11 goals following a carry (defined as traveling five or more meters with the ball) in the Champions League since the beginning of the 2021-22 season (eight goals, three assists), a record unmatched by any other player.
Meanwhile, Kane displayed cool-headedness as he calmly converted a penalty awarded after Lucas VĂĄzquez fouled Jamal Musiala, bringing his total Champions League goals to 29. His next goal will see him equal Wayne Rooney as the all-time leading English scorer in the European Cup/Champions League. Additionally, Kane’s 11 goal involvements in this season’s competition set a new record for the most achieved by an Englishman in a single campaign.
Looking ahead to Thursday’s match, Bayern faces some selection challenges, with RaphaĂŤl Guerreiro sidelined due to an ankle injury, and both Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano uncertain due to knocks.
Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: Head-to-head
In the lead-up to Wednesday’s match, Real Madrid holds a favorable record against Bayern Munich. Los Blancos have remained unbeaten in their last eight Champions League encounters with Bayern, comprising six victories and two draws. Moreover, they have secured victories in six of their last seven meetings at the BernabĂŠu, with the remaining match ending in a draw.
Bayern Munich has advanced from four of their previous seven European Cup/Champions League semi-final clashes against Madrid. However, Real Madrid emerged victorious in the last two encounters in the 2013-14 and 2017-18 seasons, subsequently winning the tournament on both occasions.
If Real Madrid were to progress on Wednesday, it would mark the first instance of either team advancing from three successive semi-final ties between the two clubs.
Bayern Munich’s defensive struggles against Real Madrid are evident in their recent Champions League encounters. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 16 matches against Madrid, marking their longest streak without a shutout against any club in the competition.
The last time Bayern managed to keep a clean sheet against Madrid was in the first leg of a semi-final tie back in May 2001, a match they won 3-1 on aggregate before ultimately lifting the trophy.
Carlo Ancelotti boasts an impressive record against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, having never suffered defeat in nine meetings. His record includes six victories and three draws, making it the longest unbeaten streak any coach has maintained against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich: Recent Form
Real Madrid has been in formidable form, remaining unbeaten in their last 42 matches across all competitions, excluding extra-time, with 30 wins and 12 draws. Their sole defeat in regular time this season occurred in September, a 3-1 loss to AtlĂŠtico Madrid in La Liga.
In contrast, Bayern Munich has experienced a less consistent run, winning only four of their last nine games across all competitions. They have drawn two matches and suffered three defeats during this period.

Furthermore, Bayern has encountered difficulties away from home in the Champions League recently. They lost 1-0 to Lazio in the round of 16 and managed only a 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the quarter-finals. This marks the first time since the 2015-16 season that Bayern has failed to win three consecutive away games in a single edition of the competition. In that season, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by AtlĂŠtico Madrid on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are set to continue their journey in the ongoing IPL (Indian Premier League) as they prepare to clash with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their upcoming fixture.
Pat Cummins, Image Credits – SRH Twitter
Scheduled to unfold at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, this encounter marks the 57th match of the tournament, taking place on Wednesday, May 08.
Following a recent loss to Mumbai Indians by seven wickets, Sunrisers approach this match eager to redeem themselves, especially on their home turf.
Meanwhile, the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants are also rebounding from a defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous outing. Positioned fifth on the points table with six wins in 11 matches, LSG is determined to secure victory and climb above SRH in the standings. Currently, both teams are tied at 12 points, with SRH occupying the fourth spot.
At this pivotal juncture in the IPL 2024 season, every aspect of a match is under intense scrutiny, given the profound impact each result holds, not only for the participating teams but for the tournament as a whole. As we approach the final stretch, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals seem to be in a relatively comfortable position, while the race for the remaining two playoff berths remains fiercely contested. Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants are among the top contenders vying for these coveted spots.

The upcoming clash between SRH and LSG in Hyderabad on Wednesday looms as a crucial showdown, potentially offering the victor a decisive advantage in the playoff race, especially considering CSK’s significantly superior net run rate. With all three teams having secured six wins and suffered five losses in their 11 games, and with minimal disparity in the net run rates of SRH and LSG, the stage is set for a high-stakes encounter. Unsurprisingly, both sides have experienced similar fluctuations in their performances throughout the season.
SRH kicked off the season with an impressive display, securing victory in five of their initial seven matches, establishing themselves as frontrunners in the playoffs race. Their dynamic batting approach proved to be a force to be reckoned with, as they set new records with their aggressive intent, making them a formidable opponent for any team. However, their recent form tells a different story, with just one win in their last four games, narrowly clinching a victory against Rajasthan Royals at home by a mere run.
While Travis Head continues to impress, the performances of his opening counterpart Abhishek Sharma and middle-order mainstay Heinrich Klaasen have faltered. The decision to replace the out-of-form Aiden Markram with all-rounder Marco Jansen has yet to yield the desired results, further adding to their batting woes. Particularly on challenging pitches, their batting prowess seems to have diminished, necessitating a resurgence before matters escalate. On the brighter side, the bowling department has shown promise, spearheaded by the leadership of Pat Cummins, ably supported by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan. If SRH can reignite their batting prowess, especially on their home ground in Hyderabad, they could pose a formidable challenge for their opponents.
Lucknow Super Giants also had a promising start to the season, securing three victories in their first four matches. However, they have struggled to maintain consistency since then, alternating between wins and losses. KL Rahul’s team hasn’t experienced a prolonged winless streak, but they have lacked the essential winning momentum crucial in T20 cricket. While Rahul himself is in contention for the Orange Cap once again, his performances haven’t been as impactful as expected, particularly as an opening batsman.
Bhuvansehwar Kumar, Image Credits – SRH Twitter
Injuries have disrupted LSG’s bowling combinations, with rookie speedster Mayank Yadav lasting only three games before succumbing to injury. Although Mohsin Khan suffered an injury early on, he has made a comeback in the latter half of the season. The main challenge for LSG lies in synchronizing performances between their batting and bowling units. Often, when one aspect of their game excels, the other falters, as evidenced in their recent defeat against KKR where they struggled in all facets of the game. Despite possessing a well-rounded squad, LSG must translate their potential into consistent on-field performances.
In a match of such high stakes, the outcome may hinge on small margins. While there are various intriguing subplots, the pivotal battle between LSG’s crafty bowling and SRH’s batting lineup is likely to take center stage.

SRH vs LSG: Pitch Report & Conditions
The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad offers a batting paradise for teams. With a surface conducive to stroke play, runs flow freely, setting the stage for potentially high-scoring encounters. Given the favorable conditions, the team winning the toss is likely to choose to bat first, aiming to set a formidable total.
Consistently, surfaces at this venue have favored batsmen, evident from the recent ODI World Cup late last year to the ongoing IPL season. The average score batting first this season has exceeded 212, with the 200-run milestone surpassed thrice in four games, highlighting the pitch’s propensity for producing high-scoring contests.

SRH vs LSG: Team News and Impact Player Strategy
Sunrisers Hyderabad
SRH has no concerns regarding fitness or availability, ensuring they can field their best possible lineup for the upcoming match.
Pat Cummins has showcased his prowess in the middle overs throughout this season, despite only securing six wickets in the crucial phase spanning overs 7-15. What’s truly remarkable is his exceptional economy rate of 7.39 across 18 overs bowled, a standout statistic considering the high-scoring nature of this year’s IPL. His role becomes even more pivotal as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) gear up to face formidable enforcers in Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) lineup, including Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, and Deepak Hooda.
In light of their recent performances, SRH might be inclined to introduce Glenn Phillips into the playing XI, a move long overdue for the talented batsman. Should Phillips be given the nod, it’s likely that Marco Jansen would make way, potentially making room for Jaydev Unadkat’s return to the side. Additionally, there’s a tantalizing prospect of unleashing the x-factor of Umran Malik, adding an extra dimension to SRH’s bowling arsenal.

Lucknow Super Giants
Except for Mayank Yadav, who is unlikely to participate in the season finale, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have no injury concerns heading into the crucial match.
Mohsin Khan has emerged as a formidable force against left-handed batters, claiming seven wickets from just 54 deliveries at an impressive economy rate of 8.14. Additionally, his effectiveness with the new ball is evident, having snared five wickets in the PowerPlay while maintaining an economy rate of just 8.14. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will rely on his prowess to contain Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) dynamic left-left opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma.
Considering Khan’s proficiency, LSG may contemplate reintroducing Quinton de Kock into their lineup. This strategic move could potentially see Ashton Turner being omitted from the playing XI as LSG seeks to bolster their batting prowess.

SRH vs LSG: Players Under The Spotlight
SRH- Travis Head
In the upcoming game against Lucknow Super Giants, all eyes will be on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Travis Head, who has emerged as a standout performer with the bat. Having amassed 444 runs in his last 10 matches, Head ranks among the highest run-scorers of the tournament. His stellar performance will be instrumental for Sunrisers Hyderabad against LSG, given his consistent contributions throughout the season. Notably, Head has already notched up three half-centuries and one century in this edition of the IPL, further highlighting his batting prowess and significance in the upcoming clash.
LSG- Naveen-ul-Haq
In the upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, all eyes will be on Lucknow Super Giants’ Naveen-ul-Haq, who has been in stellar form with the ball. The Afghan pacer has been a key contributor for his side, claiming 10 wickets in his last seven matches. Known for picking crucial wickets at crucial moments, Naveen-ul-Haq’s presence will be crucial for LSG’s bowling attack against SRH. With a confidence-boosting performance in the previous game, where he picked up three wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders, Naveen-ul-Haq will be eager to replicate his success in the upcoming encounter.

A Jedi Assassin Lurks in âThe Acolyteâ Trailer
Set a century prior to the events of the franchise’s prequel trilogy, “The Acolyte” unfolds within the High Republic era of the “Star Wars” universe, marking the deepest exploration yet in live-action productions. Described in an official synopsis, the series delves into a compelling narrative: “An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.â

In the trailer’s opening scenes, Lee’s Jedi master is seen instructing a gathering of younglings, while Stenberg’s veiled assassin makes an assassination attempt on a fellow Jedi, portrayed by Carrie-Anne Moss, within a cantina setting. Prompted by the attack, a cohort of Jedi embarks on a galaxy-spanning pursuit to apprehend the assailant before she eliminates them individually. As tension escalates, a climactic showdown ensues, with Jedi brandishing their diverse array of lightsabers, contrasting with the red blade wielded by the assassin.
âThe Acolyteâ Cast and Production
Joining the ensemble cast are Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Joonas Suotamo.

The Jedi’s Existence Is Threatened In The New ‘The Acolyte’ Trailer
In the latest trailer for “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” the dark side looms large. The highly anticipated Disney+ series, crafted by Leslye Headland, the mind behind “Russian Doll,” promises Amandla Stenberg’s character’s daring mission to infiltrate and eradicate the Jedi, marking one of the franchise’s most ambitious endeavors yet. Set a century before the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, during the High Republic era, the show hints at an existential threat facing the Jedi Order. Amidst mysterious deaths and growing disillusionment across the galaxy, the Jedi face unprecedented challenges.

The expansive era of the High Republic has been extensively explored in Star Wars literature, currently under the spotlight through the publishing initiative “Star Wars: The High Republic.” This vast expanse of the Star Wars universe, both temporally and spatially, offers rich terrain for storytelling. During a discussion with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy reflected on the potential of “The Acolyte” series, highlighting the breadth of exploration possible within this expansive universe.
“We actually were intrigued with that because if that show works, then it really gives us an opportunity to expand on that. And that’s what’s so great about television because it gives us sort of this larger playground for experimenting.”
Carrie-Anne Moss and Amandla Stenberg in ‘The Acolyte’, Image Credits – Disney
Stenberg’s involvement as the lead was initially reported in December 2021, although Lucasfilm officially confirmed their casting during Stenberg’s appearance at SDCC last year while promoting A24’s horror film “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” Subsequently, several other names were linked to the project, including Jodie Turner-Smith and Emmy-winner Lee Jung-Jae from “Squid Game,” as well as Manny Jacinto and Charlie Barnett from “Russian Doll.” As production commenced for the series last November, the stellar cast continued to grow with the additions of Carrie-Anne Moss, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Dafne Keen, further elevating the project’s caliber.
The official synopsis of the show is as follows: “The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”
The Acolyte is currently set to be released in June 2024. Watch the trailer.
