In a dramatic turn of events, AS Roma has officially parted ways with head coach Daniele De Rossi following a winless streak at the start of the Serie A season.

The former Roma midfielder was sacked after the team failed to register a victory in their first four league matches, leaving the Giallorossi sitting at a precarious point in the standings.
A Storied History Cut Short
Daniele De Rossi’s association with Roma has always been one of deep loyalty and commitment. As a player, De Rossi spent 22 years at the club, making 616 appearances between 1997 and 2019. His remarkable career at Roma cemented his status as a club legend, and his subsequent appointment as head coach in January seemed like a natural progression. He stepped in after the departure of José Mourinho, hoping to lead Roma back to the top of Italian football.
After a strong start to his coaching tenure, De Rossi’s team quickly became a force to reckon with, losing just once in his first 11 matches. This brilliant run saw Roma soar from ninth to fifth in the league standings, picking up 26 points from a possible 33. De Rossi also guided the team to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they fell to Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen.
The Downward Spiral
Despite the promising signs last season, Roma’s start to the current campaign has been nothing short of disastrous. A late equalizer in their most recent match against Genoa saw them draw 1-1, leaving the club with just three points from four matches. Roma’s decision to part ways with De Rossi came after this disappointing result, which deepened concerns about the team’s ability to turn their season around.

In an official statement, Roma said: “Daniele De Rossi has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team. The club’s decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.”
The timing of the decision suggests that Roma’s management felt an urgent need for a change in leadership to salvage their season before it spiraled further. With key players departing over the summer, including the likes of Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham, the squad has undergone significant changes. However, despite signing talents such as last season’s La Liga top goalscorer Artem Dovbyk and German veteran Mats Hummels, Roma struggled to find their rhythm.
Ivan Juric: The New Man in Charge
With De Rossi’s departure, the club has swiftly moved to bring in Ivan Juric as his replacement. The 49-year-old Croatian manager, known for his tactical acumen and no-nonsense approach, is expected to sign a contract with Roma until the end of the season, with the possibility of extending it should Roma secure a Champions League spot.

Juric will face an immediate challenge to stabilize the team ahead of their upcoming fixture against Udinese. Reports suggest that he will take charge of his first training session later today at Trigoria, Roma’s training complex, as the club prepares for the weekend match.
Juric brings a wealth of experience in Serie A, having managed Torino and Hellas Verona with relative success. His pragmatic style of play could be exactly what Roma needs to shore up a defense that has been leaking goals. Juric’s immediate task will be to restore confidence within the squad and motivate a team that has lost key figures over the summer.
De Rossi’s Legacy
De Rossi’s tenure as Roma head coach may have come to an abrupt end, but his legacy at the club remains untouched. A World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, De Rossi remains one of Roma’s most iconic figures. His time as coach was filled with flashes of brilliance, but the team’s recent slump proved too costly to ignore.
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football – Europa League – Semi Final – Second Leg – Bayer Leverkusen v AS Roma – BayArena, Leverkusen, Germany – May 9, 2024 AS Roma coach Daniele De Rossi REUTERS/Thilo Schmuelgen/File Photo
This summer, Roma saw an exodus of several important players. Chris Smalling joined Saudi club Al-Fayha, Tammy Abraham moved to AC Milan on loan, while Romelu Lukaku left for Napoli after a year on loan from Chelsea. Other exits included Andrea Belotti (Como), Rui Patricio (Atalanta), and Leonardo Spinazzola (Napoli). These significant departures, coupled with new arrivals, likely added to the difficulties De Rossi faced in trying to build a cohesive unit.
What’s Next for Roma?
The Giallorossi now look to the future under Juric, as they aim to rebuild and regain their foothold in the league. Roma’s fixture list includes a tough Europa League campaign, with a November trip to Tottenham standing out as a major test for the new manager.
As the season progresses, Juric’s impact will be under scrutiny, especially with Roma eager to secure a top-four finish and ensure qualification for Europe’s premier competition. For De Rossi, this may mark the end of his managerial stint at Roma, but his contribution to the club as a player and a coach will not be forgotten by the fans.
Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi insists their upcoming Champions League clash against Manchester City on Wednesday is not a rematch of last year’s final. While City triumphed 1-0 in the 2023 final, Inzaghi emphasized that the circumstances are entirely different this time around.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the match, Inzaghi highlighted that changes to the Champions League format and the group-stage nature of the game make it a fresh challenge. “Tomorrow starts a new Champions League, one that will be very different,” he said. “I re-watched the final a month ago during training, but this isn’t a rematch—it’s not a final, it’s a group game under the new format.”
Man City vs Inter Match Updates
The new format sees 36 teams competing in a league phase, with each team playing eight matches, a significant shift from the previous group stage. Inzaghi expressed enthusiasm about the changes but acknowledged the toll the increased number of games could take on players. He responded to concerns raised by City midfielder Rodri, who recently suggested players were nearing a breaking point due to the intense schedule.
“We understand the demands, and as coaches, we are aware of the challenges,” Inzaghi said. “While preparing for these games is exciting, we have to manage the workload. We’ve had a limited rotation of players for two years now, so we’re used to adjusting, but it’s not without its difficulties.”
Inter Milan will be without key players Federico Dimarco and Marko Arnautovic for the clash, but Inzaghi remains confident. He hinted at the need for strategic rotation of his squad to keep players fresh throughout the campaign. “I’ll have to alternate as many players as possible,” he noted.
Inzaghi also emphasized the importance of his team’s mindset going into the match, especially considering Manchester City’s formidable home record in the Champions League, where they haven’t lost since 2018. “We need to be aggressive and determined. To make it a great match, we’ll need many things to go right,” Inzaghi stressed.
While the stakes may not be as high as last year’s final, Wednesday’s match promises to be a significant test for Inter Milan as they embark on their new Champions League campaign.
As Manchester City gears up for another campaign in the Champions League, an unexpected shift in focus came when Rodri, the star midfielder, expressed concerns about player workloads. “We’re close to [strike action],” Rodri warned during a press conference ahead of City’s clash with Inter Milan.

The notion of a players’ strike has quickly become a serious topic, raising critical questions about its feasibility and potential impact on the sport.
Why Are Players Like Rodri Pushing Back?
Elite footballers, particularly those in Europe’s top leagues, are increasingly frustrated by the relentless schedule. With expanded competitions like UEFA’s Champions League and FIFA’s new Club World Cup, players are expected to exceed the 55-game threshold recommended by FIFPro, the global players’ union.
Rodri and his Manchester City teammates could face up to 75 games this season, a workload that leaves little room for rest or recovery. “It’s too much,” Rodri stated, emphasizing that performance quality is directly linked to adequate rest. Despite earning lucrative contracts, many players argue that their physical and mental health is being compromised, with commercial interests taking precedence over their well-being.

A particular point of contention is the summer schedule, where players are expected to compete in the Club World Cup between June and July. This, on top of the new Champions League format, adds extra matches to an already packed calendar.
The frustration among players has reached the point where industrial action, something previously unthinkable, is now being considered as a last resort to force meaningful change. As Rodri pointed out, the players’ concerns are not about money, but about protecting their physical health and ensuring the sport maintains its quality.
How Close Are Players to Striking?
Although Rodri’s warning makes it seem like a strike could happen imminently, the process of organizing such action is still in its early stages. The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) would need to conduct a strike ballot, requiring the majority support of its nearly 5,000 members. A coordinated strike would only occur if negotiations with stakeholders, including UEFA, FIFA, and domestic leagues, completely fail.
The last time English football came close to a players’ strike was in 2001, when the PFA and Premier League were at odds over the union’s share of broadcast revenue. During that dispute, 99% of players voted in favor of strike action, although the conflict was resolved before any games were impacted. The PFA, along with its European counterparts, remains a key player in any future strike discussions.
The Legal and Practical Challenges of a Strike
Striking in football presents unique challenges. Unlike in other industries where a single employer is the target, elite footballers answer to multiple governing bodies—domestic leagues, national football associations, UEFA, and FIFA. This fragmentation makes organizing collective action much more complex. Each of these organizations could potentially take legal action to block any strike, making it difficult for players to coordinate effectively.
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football – Euro 2028 & Euro 2032 Hosts Announcement – Nyon, Switzerland – October 10, 2023 The UEFA logo is pictured at the headquarters ahead of the announcement REUTERS/Denis Balibouse/File Photo
Additionally, the PFA and FIFPro, the global players’ union, would need to be heavily involved in any industrial action. They would also need to weigh the potential repercussions, including the possibility of legal retaliations from football organizations. For instance, any strike action affecting FIFA or UEFA competitions could see players facing legal challenges from these governing bodies.
Despite these hurdles, players’ unions have been gaining ground in their fight for better conditions. Both the PFA and FIFPro have already launched legal action against FIFA, citing the governing body’s unilateral control over the international match calendar as detrimental to players’ health.
How Would a Strike Impact Competitions?
While it remains unclear which competitions would be most vulnerable to strike action, FIFA’s Club World Cup appears to be a potential target. The tournament, which has struggled to attract significant broadcasting and sponsorship deals, is seen by many as an unnecessary burden on players’ schedules. Its expanded format, set to begin in 2025, has been widely criticized as the “straw that broke the camel’s back” in the ongoing dispute over the global football calendar.
However, domestic competitions like the Premier League and the FA Cup are unlikely to be affected, as relations between the PFA and these organizations remain relatively amicable. Instead, the players’ ire is directed primarily at FIFA, with the unions pushing for greater representation in discussions about the international calendar.
Will a Strike Really Happen?
Rodri’s comments should not be dismissed as mere rhetoric. The underlying issues players face are too deeply rooted, with many elite stars believing that without significant changes, industrial action will eventually become inevitable. However, when and how this strike might take place remains uncertain.
FILE PHOTO: The logo of FIFA is seen in front of its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland September 26, 2017. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann
Players’ unions, including the PFA, are advocating for long-term reforms to reduce the strain on their members. This includes taking legal action against FIFA in the European Court of Justice, with the goal of limiting FIFA’s control over the match calendar and restoring a healthier balance for players. Whether this results in meaningful change remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the players’ unions are prepared to take drastic measures if their voices continue to be ignored.
The possibility of a players’ strike in the Premier League and beyond is no longer a far-fetched idea. As Rodri’s comments indicate, the growing frustrations over player workloads and the expanding football calendar have brought the issue to a boiling point. While a strike may not be imminent, the message is clear: if meaningful reforms are not made soon, football’s biggest stars could take unprecedented action. The ball is now in FIFA’s court, and the world of football watches with bated breath.
Ricky Ponting – IPL 2025 : Punjab Kings (PBKS) have made a bold move by appointing legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting as their head coach ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This exciting announcement comes just months after Ponting’s seven year association with Delhi Capitals ended, signaling a fresh start for both the iconic coach and the underperforming franchise.
Let’s have a look into more details: Ricky Ponting – IPL 2025
Ricky Ponting, known for his sharp cricketing acumen and winning mentality, has signed a four year contract with PBKS, with the task of revitalizing a team that has struggled to find consistent success. His appointment marks the sixth head coach change for Punjab Kings in just seven seasons, highlighting the franchise’s desperate need for stability and direction.
“I am excited to take up this new challenge with Punjab Kings,” said Ponting. “Our discussions with the owners and management showed a shared vision for the future of the team. I look forward to working closely with the squad and helping the franchise deliver the kind of performances that the fans have been waiting for.”
Team Overhaul and Leadership Decisions
One of Ponting’s immediate priorities will be overseeing the mega auction for IPL 2025, a critical juncture for the franchise. With star players like Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Jitesh Sharma in their ranks, Ponting will play a vital role in deciding which players to retain and building a team capable of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Another pressing issue is finding a new captain following the retirement of veteran batter Shikhar Dhawan. The team’s leadership void adds another layer of complexity to Ponting’s mission, but with a blend of young talent and experienced international stars like Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, and Kagiso Rabada, Punjab Kings are poised for a major transformation under his guidance.
Ponting’s IPL Legacy: From Player to Champion Coach
Ponting’s IPL journey began as a player with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008, and later, with Mumbai Indians in 2013, where he made the pivotal decision to step down as captain mid-season, paving the way for Rohit Sharma to take over. That year, Mumbai Indians went on to win their first IPL title, cementing Ponting’s legacy as a visionary leader.
As head coach of Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024, Ponting led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances, including their maiden final in 2020. While the last few seasons were less successful, his ability to foster young talent and lead teams with diverse rosters is well established.
A New Era for Punjab Kings?
Punjab Kings have often struggled to convert potential into performance, but Ponting’s arrival has sparked hopes of a resurgence. The team finished ninth in the 2024 season, but with Ponting at the helm, expectations are high that the franchise will finally break its playoff drought.
For Punjab Kings fans, the appointment of a coach with such an illustrious record is a promising sign. With Ponting’s proven ability to motivate and manage teams in the high pressure environment of the IPL, there’s optimism that PBKS could soon become a formidable force in the league.
Ricky Ponting’s appointment as head coach of Punjab Kings marks a turning point for the franchise. With his leadership, cricketing experience, and a clear vision, Ponting brings the potential for a much needed cultural shift within the team. As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Punjab Kings to see if they can finally unlock their potential under one of the most successful figures in cricket history.
Let’s take a closer look at Friday’s UEFA Champions League clash at Gewiss Stadium with our Atalanta vs Arsenal prediction and preview. Will the Gunners kick off their campaign with a win in Bergamo?
Atalanta vs Arsenal: Match Preview
Arsenal travel to Bergamo on Friday for their Champions League opener against Atalanta, riding high after a pivotal Premier League win over the weekend.
Mikel Arteta’s squad begins their campaign on the road, brimming with confidence following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Tottenham on Sunday.
Gabriel Magalhães’ second-half header secured the win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, sending Arsenal into their European fixture with a statement victory that reinforced their early-season title aspirations.
Last season, Arteta’s team reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but a new challenge awaits in the 2024-25 edition. Teams will face eight different opponents – four home and four away – with all 36 clubs competing in a single league table for the group stage.
As they prepare for UEFA’s revamped format, Arsenal can take confidence from having won their opening match in each of their last six major European campaigns (five in the UEFA Europa League and last season’s Champions League).
The last team to defeat Arsenal in their opening game was Dinamo Zagreb in the 2015-16 Champions League, though Atalanta will back themselves to get a strong start at home in this curtain-raiser.

Atalanta’s 3-0 triumph in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen marked Gian Piero Gasperini’s 50th game as head coach in major European competitions (excluding qualifiers). The experienced manager has won nearly half of those matches (48%), securing 24 victories (D14 L12).
Ademola Lookman is a player to watch, having netted five goals in his last three Europa League starts last season, including a hat-trick in the final against Leverkusen. He also found the back of the net this past weekend, scoring the decisive goal in Atalanta’s 3-2 win over Fiorentina.
Despite his form, Lookman has yet to score in four previous outings against Arsenal. Additionally, his only Champions League appearance came in October 2019 for RB Leipzig against Zenit.
Goals could be plentiful in this clash, considering Atalanta’s last four matches in this competition — all in the 2021-22 group stage — saw both teams scoring two or more goals (D2 L2). However, no team in European Cup history has both scored and conceded 2+ goals in five consecutive games.
In their 23 total Champions League matches, Atalanta’s games have averaged 3.6 goals per game (40 scored, 43 conceded), the second-highest average among teams with 20+ appearances in the competition, just behind Viktoria Plzen (3.8 per game).
Factoring in Arsenal’s scoring prowess in European competitions, an action-packed, goal-filled encounter could be on the cards at Gewiss Stadium. Only Atlético Madrid (+6.16) surpassed Arsenal’s overperformance of expected goals (xG) in last season’s Champions League, with Arsenal scoring 19 goals from an xG of 13.51 (+5.49).
Arteta’s side also registered the third-highest shot conversion rate in the competition last season (15.7%), trailing only Manchester United (16.9%) and Atlético Madrid (16.8%). This highlights that Gasperini will need to be wary of Arsenal’s clinical finishing, rather than the volume or quality of chances they produce.
Raheem Sterling, who came off the bench against Tottenham in the last match, could make his Champions League debut for Arsenal in this fixture. If he does, he would become the first player in European Cup history to represent four different English teams.

Having already featured for Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea, Sterling would surpass the likes of David Batty (Leeds, Blackburn, Newcastle), Yossi Benayoun (Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea), William Gallas (Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs), and Kolo Touré (Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool), all of whom played for three English clubs in Europe’s top competition.
While Sterling may need to wait for his starting opportunity, Arteta will likely turn once again to Bukayo Saka. Saka was involved in eight goals across nine Champions League appearances last season.
His four goals and four assists were the highest number of direct goal involvements by an English player in their debut Champions League season, surpassing the previous record of six goals and one assist set by Lee Bowyer for Leeds in 2000-01.
Atalanta vs Arsenal: Head-to-Head
The revamped competition introduces a host of new matchups, with this being the first-ever meeting between Atalanta and Arsenal.
Arteta’s Arsenal will be the fifth English side Atalanta have faced in major European competitions, following encounters with Everton (W2), Manchester City (D1 L1), Liverpool (W2 L2), and Manchester United (D1 L1).

However, Arsenal have struggled in their recent Champions League trips to Italy, losing their last three away games there — against Roma (1-0 in 2009), Milan (4-0 in 2012), and Napoli (2-0 in 2013).
The defeat to Napoli was Arsenal’s most recent visit to Italy, but Arteta’s revitalized Gunners will be determined to put those past disappointments behind them as they seek European glory this time around.
Atalanta vs Arsenal: Team News
Atalanta
Atalanta face fewer injury concerns compared to Arsenal, with their only confirmed absentees being ex-West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca and young center-back Giorgio Scalvini.
Rafael Toloi is also doubtful to recover from a muscle injury in time for the clash with Arsenal, while former Everton defender Ben Godfrey is a question mark due to a minor back issue.
Mateo Retegui, who has already netted four Serie A goals this season, will lead the attack for La Dea. He will be supported by the talented duo of Charles De Ketelaere and Ademola Lookman, both of whom scored alongside Retegui in Atalanta’s 3-2 victory over Fiorentina last weekend.
Atalanta: Predicted Lineup
Goalkeeper: Carnesecchi
Defenders: Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac
Midfielders: Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri
Forwards: Lookman, Retegui, De Ketelaere
Arsenal
Arsenal were without key midfielders Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in their weekend victory over Spurs, with Rice suspended and Odegaard sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during international duty.
Adding to their concerns, star player Bukayo Saka limped off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, potentially joining Mikel Merino, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Kieran Tierney on the injury list.

However, reports indicate that Saka was only dealing with cramp and is expected to be fit for the Atalanta clash. Rice is also set to return after completing his Premier League suspension.
Odegaard remains a doubt but could recover in time to play, joining new signing Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko on the list of uncertainties.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, both substitutes on Sunday, will be eager to start at the Gewiss Stadium.

Mohun Bagan SG played out a 0-0 draw with Tajik side Ravshan Kulob in their first match of the AFC Cup 24-25 group stage. The Mariners have shared one point with their opposition as their continental campaign started rather slowly.
Both the hosts and the visitors had 11 shots in the game, with two on target. However, the possession metrics told a different story altogether. While Bagan enjoyed 63% of possession and dominated the ball, their opponents only had the ball for a third of the game, but were more effective.

The hosts had plenty of incredible chances to go up in the game, but Jason Cummings and Dimitri Petratos were far from their best under the Salt Lake Stadium floodlights.
While they are usually dominant in the ISL, they simply could not convert Greg Stewart’s incredible passes. Jamie Maclaren on the other hand, was left on the bench, and the Australian would have surely fancied himself to score at least one of those chances missed.
In the end, the missed opportunities might prove to be too costly for the ISL winners, as they face strong opposition next. However, with their incredible transfer window performance, they might be on their way to the knockout stage as the team gets to know each other better.
Andy Caroll has signed for French fourth-division side Bordeaux after leaving second division side Amiens. The veteran scored four goals in 35 games for the French second division side, and also featured in all four of their matches this season.
However, he has opted to sign for the fallen giants, after their heartbreaking double relegation at the end of the 23-24 season. His new club have confirmed the arrival of the former Liverpool striker, in what could prove to be a great deal.
Andy Caroll signs for French fourth division club Bordeaux
🇫🇷 Andy Carroll has completed a move to Bordeaux.
The 35-year-old terminated his contract at Amiens by mutual agreement in order to join the fourth-tier French side.
The striker scored four times in 28 appearances in Ligue 2 last season.
“His size, his goal-scoring talent and his fighting spirit will certainly help the Navy and White this season,” the club wrote, welcoming the veteran.
“We can’t wait to see him on the pitch!”
Bordeaux had to surrender their professional status after declaring bankruptcy. As a result, a rumoured takeover by Liverpool owners FSG fell through as well, dooming them to non-professional status.
Caroll, on the other hand, has been on the move for the last few summers. After leaving Reading, he played for Amiens and has now signed for the fourth division side to make it eight clubs in his professional career. The veteran has earned nine caps for the England national team, scoring two goals.
Which other clubs has Caroll played for?
