Cast of Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo is the story of an underdog teenager who uses his gaming prowess to pursue a career in professional racing. Despite how unbelievable the plot may sound, actual people and true events are the basis of the 2024 sports drama.
The biographical adaption features versions of gamer-turned-racer Jann Mardenborough, his parents, and several important characters from the plot, albeit not all of them have real-life counterparts. One actor who plays a racing trainer named Jack Salter is David Harbour; however, it’s uncertain if this character is based on a real coach.
Furthermore, although Mardenborough faced 90,000 competitors in the GT Academy competition that began his career, his “rivals” in the film don’t appear to be any particular racers.
Gran Turismo, however, takes clear influence from the events and figures that shaped Mardenborough’s voyage, despite certain disparities. Meet the real people that Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, Geri Halliwell, and other actors brought to the big screen.
Jann Mardenborough, played by Archie Madekwe.
Jann Mardenborough, the youngest GT Academy champion who went on to become a professional racer, is portrayed by Archie Madekwe. Ever since his triumph in the 2011 Nissan and Sony-sponsored TV competition series, Mardenborough has participated in competitive racing all over the world.
In addition, the English gamer-turned-racer worked as a co-producer and consultant on the 2023 movie that was based on his experiences. During the filming, Mardenborough even filled in as the stunt driver for his co-star.
Madekwe and Mardenborough sat down to talk about the true history of Gran Turismo and what it was like on site in a movie promo. Madekwe, who starred in the 2019 thriller Midsommar, said, “I think it’s maybe the first film ever where there’s a film being made about someone’s life and they are stunt driving in the film.”

Danny Moore As Orlando Bloom
Darren Cox, the real-life creator of GT Academy, serves as an inspiration for Orlando Bloom’s character Danny Moore. Cox had the idea to let fans of the Gran Turismo video game to go behind the wheel of a real vehicle while he was Nissan’s European general manager.
In 2012, Cox discussed the idea behind GT Academy in an interview with The New York Times. He clarified that every piece of gear used in the game, including the pedals and steering wheels, is very comparable to those seen in real cars. “Aiming a car, braking, turning the car into the right area, accelerating out of the corner,” as Cox put it, “works the same way in real life as it does in the game,” he continued. “Just without the G-forces.”
Steven Mardenborough played by Djimon Hounsou
As a former professional football player, Djimon Hounsou portrays Jann Mardenborough’s father, who shares his son’s competitive attitude in the 2023 biography. Steve Mardenborough played football for a number of English and Welsh sides during his career. He even played for IFK Östersund in Sweden for a season. His most well-known role was as a member of the Darlington Football Club team in the early 1990s, when he and his spouse welcomed Jann.
Lesley Mardenborough, played by Geri Halliwell
Geri Halliwell, a former member of Spice Girls, plays Lesley, Jann Mardenborough’s mother, in the film Gran Turismo. Jann stated that the singer “nailed” her part in an interview with The Sun.
He said, “She did it perfectly.” “It’s Geri Halliwell, everyone knows her, but she’s my mother now. It’s strange, absurd, and incredibly unrealistic.” Halliwell’s phone number was in Jann’s mom’s possession, and the two had regular conversations. Jann clarified, “Geri would want to know how I would act in this situation.”
In a quick interview on the movie, Lesley, who is less well-known than her husband, described her pre-racing son as “not particularly outgoing and quite a home boy.”
Sakunori Yamauchi, played by Takehiro Hira
Takehiro Hira, who previously acted in the British TV series Girl/Haji and the 2021 G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes, as the game designer of the Gran Turismo franchise. The CEO of Tokyo-based Polyphony Digital, the company that created the popular PlayStation racing game, is Kazunori Yamauchi.
