Some homecomings need a fairytale ending, and this one very nearly got denied. Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge of Real Madrid began with a dramatic 2-1 win at Espanyol, with unheralded substitute Carlos Espí popping up in the 90th minute to spare Los Blancos an underwhelming opening-day draw.

## How the Drama Unfolded

Jude Bellingham gave Madrid the perfect start, powering home a header from Arda Güler’s delivery in the ninth minute. Espanyol responded well, though, levelling through Alex Calatrava in the 30th minute after a fine team move cut Madrid open. With chances drying up in the second half, Mourinho turned to his bench, and it was Espí, the lowest-profile of Madrid’s summer signings, who capitalised on a loose ball in the box to fire home the winner in stoppage time.

## New Faces Make Their Mark

Beyond Espí’s heroics, Saturday marked debuts for several of Madrid’s summer arrivals, with Yan Diomande and Marc Cucurella also introduced late as Mourinho searched for a winner. “I think that we deserved to win but that Espanyol didn’t deserve to lose,” Mourinho admitted afterward, a fitting summary of a scrappy, unconvincing opening-day performance ultimately rescued by an unlikely hero.

## Why It Matters

With Barcelona’s domestic dominance the clear target this season, this hard-fought win offers Mourinho a platform to build early momentum, even if the performance itself raised plenty of questions. Full match statistics are available on the [official LaLiga website](https://www.laliga.com/).
