Last night’s Round 4 of the Carabao Cup saw Chelsea take on Southampton and Arsenal host Leeds United, while Sunderland took on QPR.
The Champions of Europe advanced to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup on penalties, winning 4-3. Kai Havertz scored right before half time for Chelsea, heading a corner from Hakim Ziyech. However, Che Adams managed to equalise two minutes into the second half.
The Scottish striker was ready to pounce on Kyle Walker-Peters’ saved effort on goal, and made it 1-1. Neither team was able to find a breakthrough in regulation time, and the game went to penalties. Mason Mount was denied a penalty once again for Chelsea. For the Saints, Theo Walcott and William Smallbone got their shots off target. Reece James took the final penalty for Chelsea and scored to send them into the quarter finals.
Arsenal, on the other hand, defeated Leeds United 2-0 to advance to the next round. Calum Chambers scored with his first touch of the ball, nodding a corner past the line to make it 1-0. Meslier got a hand to it, but the ball had crossed the line already.
Eddie Nketiah doubled Arsenal’s lead shortly after, rolling the ball into an empty net past Meslier. Leeds United had not given up at that point, but it was not possible for them to grow back into the game.
In the third game of the night, Sunderland beat Queen’s Park Rangers 3-1 on penalties. They have advanced to the quarter finals as well.
The fixtures for the last eight will be announced on Saturday.
