Canon launches EOS M200 with 4K video support & eye-detect AF

Canon has unveiled a new mirrorless camera known as EOS M200 which is the successor to the EOS M100. It is an entry-level camera to the mirrorless camera series which packs the same 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor as the last model.

The camera features a newer Digic 8 processor that adds some extra power and eventually unlocks two important new features: Dual Pixel eye-detect autofocus and 4K, 24p video (with a big caveat).

The Canon M200 has aggressive pricing and is aimed for smartphone users who want to upgrade their photography powers. Here the body remains the same as the M100, with the same button layout, pocket-friendly size and a pop-up selfie screen.

The camera’s physical controls are minimal, so it means the camera settings are largely controlled from the flip-up touchscreen. With an identical sensor to the M100, the M200 should also deliver the same excellent image quality as before. It gives accurate colours and detailed RAW images.

Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus is best for its accuracy, both for photos and video. But, the new eye-detect AF feature will make it a lot easier for novices to use. Canon has even increased the number of selectable AF points from 49 to 123.

The M200 can now do 4K video at 24 fps, but only with a 1.6 times crop. So, that means the 15-45mm kit lens effectively becomes a 38-115mm lens in 4K mode. The presence of Optical Image Stabilizer with a compatible lens is an advantage for the camera.

The ISO sensitivity of the camera ranges from 100 – 25600 in 1/3 stop increments and a shutter speed of 30 – 1/4000 seconds. It features a 3-inch Touchscreen LCD (TFT) display with 3:2 aspect ratio which can be tilted approx 180° upwards.

The camera has a lot of shooting modes like Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control, Scene Intelligent Auto, Hybrid Auto, Creative Assist, etc, some are new and some from its predecessor EOS M100. Also, there are new Image Processing styles that enhances your photography.

On the connectivity front, we have Wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth v4.1 support. There are both Micro USB & HDMI ports for seamless sharing of photos and videos.

Still, the compactness along with good image quality will help users to get a good camera in a budget. The updated processor along with 4K video support and extra features is a healthy upgrade for the EOS M200 over last gen.

The Canon EOS M200 is expected to arrive in October in black and white variants for $549 with an EF-M 15-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. Know more about the EOS M200 from Canon’s official site.
