Girona have arguably had their best season ever, pulling off an exceptional run in the first half of the season. The club defeated Barcelona as well as Atletico Madrid and were at the top of the table before being overcome by Real Madrid, who remain the only side to have defeated them this season.Â
While they managed to score four against both Barca and Atletico, they were completely shut out against Madrid, being handed a 3-0 loss at home. But they remain in contention for the LaLiga title, and will battle with the record Champions League winners who are the favourites heading into the second half of the season.
Girona have had the season of a lifetime this yearÂ
To think that their best-ever finish to a domestic season is 10th is baffling, now that they are battling for the title. As things stand, both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are seven and ten points behind the City Football Group-owned club respectively, who could be the next big shock since Leicester City winning the Premier League.
The contribution of striker Artem Dovbyk has been crucial, with the Ukrainian scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 14 games to spearhead Girona’s title challenge. On the other hand, Manchester City loanee Savio has also hit the ground running, scoring five goals and providing five assists.Â
Under manager Michel, it will be a miracle if the young team can pull off the extraordinary. But, the manager has reminded his players that the big teams are not to be counted out until the race for the title is fully over.Â
