The Call of Duty series is gearing up to transport players to the future once again in 2025, with a sequel to Black Ops 2 set in the early 2030s. Rumors spread across social media about what is said to be a focus group meeting scheduled on the next Call of Duty title being held, and some details reportedly leaked.
The Upcoming Call of Duty
While the 2024 installment, Black Ops 6, is set against the backdrop of the Gulf War in the 1990s, the 2025 Black Ops title reportedly advances to the 2030s, continuing the narrative from 2012’s Black Ops 2, which was set in 2025.
This brand new game allegedly picks up the storyline from that point using original Black Ops 2 hero David Mason. Continuing from Black Ops 6, returning mechanics include the new Body Shield and Omnimovement as well upgrades such as human shields modified with grenades attached so they can be thrown at enemies and wall jumping.
There is also word on an eight-player feature in the Zombies mode. Also, it was reported that Infinity Ward is currently developing the franchise’s next Modern Warfare game, potentially Modern Warfare 4 which is expected to a released in 2026.
Developer Treyarch has enjoyed a four-year development cycle for Black Ops 6, marking the longest time spent on a mainline Call of Duty game to date. Expectations are high following the disappointing reception of 2023’s Modern Warfare 3, which is considered one of the least well-received campaigns in the franchise’s history.
Modern Warfare 3 was initially intended as an expansion for 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, but developers faced crunch time as they scrambled to turn it into a fully realized sequel within just 16 months. Sledgehammer studio head Aaron Halon insisted that Modern Warfare 3 had been “years in the making.” If reports are accurate about next year’s Call of Duty being another Black Ops game shortly after Black Ops 6, Activision will likely face scrutiny regarding its value as a substantial sequel.
In the meantime, Black Ops 6 is set to launch on October 25 and will be available on Game Pass. This marks the first Call of Duty title to be included in Game Pass since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for $69 billion.
