Fans haven’t forgotten Cable. Josh Brolin’s time-travelling soldier stole scenes in *Deadpool 2*, then went missing from *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Now the man who co-created the character, **Rob Liefeld**, has weighed in on whether Cable could return in *Deadpool 4*.

## Rob Liefeld: Overview

| Detail | Info |
| --- | --- |
| **Character** | Cable (Nathan Summers) |
| **Actor** | Josh Brolin |
| **Debut** | Deadpool 2 |
| **Absent from** | Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) |
| **Who spoke** | Rob Liefeld, Cable and Deadpool co-creator |
| **Where** | Exclusive interview with The Direct at MultiCon 2026 |
| **Rumor** | Ryan Reynolds wants Cable in Deadpool 4 (July 2026 report) |

## What Liefeld Said?

Liefeld made it clear that nobody wants Cable back on screen more than he does. He joked that he could just call Brolin to check the rumor, but admitted he can’t do that on camera.

His honest take is that Brolin simply doesn’t need comic book movies. The actor is in constant demand from top directors, so Liefeld isn’t sure Cable still interests him. Even so, he hopes Brolin would come back if given the chance, and he believes there was a lot more to explore with the character.

## The Reynolds Factor

Liefeld also expects more Deadpool films. He compared Ryan Reynolds’ bond with Deadpool to Ralph Macchio’s with Daniel LaRusso from *The Karate Kid*, suggesting Reynolds will keep playing the role for years. A July 2026 report said Reynolds wants to reunite with Cable in *Deadpool 4* alongside other X-Men.

## The Cable Cameos That Almost Happened

Cable’s MCU arrival has been close before:

- **2022:** Concept art for *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness* showed scrapped ideas with Deadpool and Cable posters as Strange and America Chavez fell through universes.
- **January 2025:** Liefeld said on X that Marvel Studios blocked Cable’s return in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, which he called an all-time boner move.

## Why Fans Want Him Back?

Brolin captured the character’s scarred intensity and dry humor, and the look was loved by comic readers. Cable also brings plenty of story material, including time-travel paradoxes, X-Force missions and family ties to Jean Grey and Cyclops. The animated *X-Men ‘97* put him at the center of the X-Force story and the clash with Apocalypse, which gives Marvel a ready template for the live-action version. You can read about the character’s history on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_(character)).

## What Happens Next?

Nothing is confirmed. The odds depend on Brolin’s schedule, his interest and Marvel’s plans for the mutant saga. For now, the creator is rooting for it, and so are many fans. Want more?
