The 2019-20 Bundesliga season has been halted since 13th May due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But things have got better now and they are planning to resume the league this month.
German chancellor Angela Merkel has confirmed that the Bundesliga can resume with players and staff having to follow strict hygiene rules.
It means Germany’s top flight is on course to be the first major European league to make its return during the Coronavirus pandemic. Bundesliga is likely to resume on the weekends of either 16th May 16 or 23rd May, both seemingly feasible.
All large gatherings in Germany have been banned until 31st August. So there is no possibility of opening up stadiums to the supporters and the games will be played behind closed doors. But the games will be telecasted live and will allow the cash inflow from broadcasting revenues once again.
Last month the DFL’s executive committee said: “We do not want an economic crisis to lead to structural damage that could be irreparable and radically change the face of German professional football.”
The Bundesliga will resume on matchday 26. Bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund and Schalke will face each other. While league leaders Bayern Munich will travel to the capital to take on Union Berlin.
