BTS Members Embark on Solo Journeys
Shortly after the release of their anthology album “Proof,” commemorating their ninth anniversary, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook announced in a video shared on June 14, 2022, their intention to take a hiatus from group activities. This break allows them the opportunity to focus on personal and solo ventures.
While this break offers BTS the chance to dedicate time to their individual endeavors and fulfill mandatory military service obligations, the group has already demonstrated their individual capabilities. RM, serving as the group’s leader and part of BTS’ rap line alongside Suga and J-Hope, was the first to venture into solo work.
RM – ‘RM’ (2015) & ‘Mono’ (2018)
RM made his solo debut by releasing his self-titled mixtape, “RM,” on March 20, 2015. The mixtape featured 11 tracks where the BTS leader delved into his doubts and internal struggles while also expressing his confidence as a skilled rapper. Among the standout tracks were the singles “Do You,” “Awakening,” and “Joke.”
Following the success of his debut mixtape, RM returned with his second solo project, “Mono,” in 2018. This time, he embraced a more collaborative approach, involving various writers and producers such as Honne, Supreme Boi, Sam Klempner, Hiss Noise, and Adora to create a more introspective sound. The single “Forever Rain” was released from this collection. “Mono” reached No. 26 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Suga – ‘Agust D’ (2016) & ‘D-2’ (2020)
In 2016, Suga introduced his debut mixtape, “Agust D,” which marked a significant shift in persona and stage name for the BTS rapper. This release showcased Suga’s prowess in hardcore rap and drew influence from underground music scenes. Collaborating with writer-producers Slow Rabbit, June, Pdogg, and Supreme Boi, the mixtape featured singles “Agust D” and “give it to me.”
In 2020, Suga followed up with “D-2,” marking a transition towards exploring his present experiences as a then-28-year-old, diverging from retrospection on his past. The mixtape enjoyed commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Top Rap Albums chart and No. 11 on the Billboard 200.
J-Hope – ‘Hope World’ (2018), ‘Jack in the Box’ (2022)

His solo debut, “Hope World,” emerged in 2018, offering a glimpse into his identity as a rapper beyond BTS and reflecting on his journey towards becoming a producer. Featuring singles “Daydream” and “Airplane,” the project secured spots at No. 19 on the Top Rap Albums chart and No. 38 on the Billboard 200.
On June 26, 2022, he announced the impending release of his solo album, “Jack in the Box,” slated for July 15, marking him as the first BTS member to unveil a solo project following their decision to focus on personal endeavors. According to the press release, “Jack in the Box” symbolizes J-Hope’s desire to defy conventions and continue evolving.
