BSNL has officially announced the name of its upcoming 5G service as it completes preparations for launch. After asking users on social media to help come up with a potential name, state-owned operator BSNL India has found a name for its 5G network, which they call Q-5G, a short form for Quantum 5G. The development was announced via BSNL India’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, where the company thanked its users for the overwhelming response.

BSNL Unveils Q-5G Network, Prepares to Install 100,000 More Towers to Boost Nationwide Connectivity
In the post, BSNL announced the successful rollout of Q-5G and pointed out that the name represents the strength, speed, and future-ready capabilities of its upcoming network. Union Minister of State for Communications, Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, recently disclosed that BSNL is planning to scale its 4G and 5G infrastructure to an even larger extent. The company is preparing for the second phase of its network expansion, which involves installing another 100,000 4G mobile towers to strengthen nationwide connectivity.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is currently waiting for approval from the Union Cabinet to begin this phase. Pemmasani added that once the first 100,000 mobile towers are put in place, BSNL would approach the Cabinet—chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—for clearance to go ahead with the following 100,000 towers.
This additional capacity will have an extremely positive impact on the overall network and will help in improved coverage in rural areas, the release added. The initiative strongly emphasizes the use of indigenous technology.
In May 2023, BSNL signed contracts with Ericsson for the procurement of telecom equipment and with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tejas Networks for the expansion of mobile towers. The company has budgeted an amount of ₹13,000 crore for maintaining these towers for the next ten years. So far, BSNL has installed 100,000 4G/5G towers, out of which more than 70,000 are already operational, marking a significant step forward in India’s digital connectivity goals.
