Brentford won their first Premier League game in their history by defeating fellow London club Arsenal 2-0 in the opening fixture of the 21/22 season.
The Bees were on the front foot right from the first minute and got the breakthrough in the first half itself, thanks to a goal from Sergi Canos. The player took a touch inside Arsenal’s box from the left flank and fired the ball past Calum Chambers to beat Bernd Leno at his near post, scoring the first goal of the new season and the same for the club in the process.
Arsenal managed to grow into the game, and had more of the ball after going behind. However, they were unable to create any promising chances to put themselves on level terms. The Gunners’ new number 10, Emile Smith-Rowe had a good chance shortly after the break, but his effort was parried away by David Raya.
Granit Xhaka also came mighty close to the goal, but his effort went over the bar in the 70th minute. Brentford then managed to put the game to bed, scoring their second goal of the game from a long throw-in, headed in by Christian Norgaard.
Mikel Arteta’s men have a lot of work to do to get back from this defeat, with even more pressure on the Spaniard now. Thomas Frank, on the other hand, showed the Premier League exactly how good they were in the second division last season.
