Samsung did take everyone by surprise in June 2019 when it announced a partnership with AMD to develop a mobile GPU, with a view to offering improved performance over its current Arm Mali GPU and bring AMD’s high-performance Radeon graphics to mobile processors. At Tuesday’s Exynos On 2021 event for the launch of the Exynos 2100, Samsung revealed a bit more information about its custom GPU plans.

According to SamMobile, Dr. Inyup Kang, president of Samsung’s System LSI Business, confirmed during the event that Samsung is partnering with AMD to produce a “next-generation mobile GPU” that will be launched “in the next flagship product.”

That’s all that Kang had revealed about the topic and leaving a lot of unanswered questions behind about the Samsung and AMD partnership, however, it does confirm that we’ll get to see this new GPU in the near future.

Exactly what Kang meant by “next flagship product” remained a mystery until Samsung Semiconductor clarified to Android Authority that he was not referring to its next flagship phone rather he meant the next flagship Exynos processor. “By ‘next flagship product,’ Dr. Kang meant Exynos,” a company spokesperson told Android Authority, adding that it wasn’t able to clarify specific devices that will use the next processor.

What matters more is the performance that this GPU made by the partnership of both the tech giants will be able to provide. A powerful custom GPU just might be the saving grace for the Exynos project with Samsung moving away from custom CPU cores for its Exynos chipsets.

Nevertheless, the confirmation that Samsung’s next Exynos flagship processor would use an AMD GPU means we can expect it to land in 2022, which seems like the Galaxy S22 series could offer AMD graphics this time next year.
